One hour effects of salbutamol and formoterol on blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation in asthmatics.

Rev Port Pneumol

Académico da Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, UNIRIO Scientific Initiation Programme.

Published: October 2008

Aim: To analyse systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), partial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) disorders for an hour after short and long acting beta2-agonists.

Material And Methods: Twenty-four severe persistent asthma Pulmonology outpatients at Hospital Universitário Gaffrée e Guinle were selected. SBP, DBP, SpO2 and HR values were determined before and after 400 microg of salbutamol and 12 microg of formoterol, on different days, with a minimum interval of 24 hours.

Results: All patients showed ventilatory obstruction, as seen by a reduced FEV1/FVC ratio. There was no statistical SBP/DBP/HR difference after bronchodilator agents, but SpO2 increased with salbutamol.

Conclusion: A standard dose of salbutamol and formoterol does not cause haemodynamic disorder.

The first combination inhaled corticosteroid and short-acting beta₂ agonist (ICS-SABA) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023 for as-needed treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to reduce the risk of asthma exacerbations in patients 18 years of age and older. The recently approved product contains an ICS-albuterol combination. The 2024 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines recommend as-needed ICS-formoterol as the preferred asthma reliever therapy; however, a GINA alternative recommendation is the use of ICS whenever an as-needed (SABA) is used.

Objectives: Since 2019 as-needed low-dose ICS-formoterol in a single inhaler has been recommended for treatment of mild asthma in children aged more than 12 years. Alternatively, the use of ICS-albuterol has been proposed in countries where ICS-formoterol is not available or affordable. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cost-utility of as-needed ICS-albuterol in separate inhalers compared to ICS-formoterol in a single inhaler as reliever therapy in pediatric patients with mild asthma living in Colombia.

Background: We evaluated the inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting muscarinic antagonist/long-acting β-agonist (ICS/LAMA/LABA) triple therapy with budesonide/glycopyrronium/formoterol fumarate dihydrate (BGF) versus dual LAMA/LABA and ICS/LABA therapies in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and phenotypic features of asthma (bronchodilator reversibility and elevated blood eosinophils), but no asthma diagnosis, for whom treatment guidelines are limited.

Patients And Methods: KRONOS (NCT02497001) and ETHOS (NCT02465567) enrolled patients with moderate-to-very-severe COPD, no current asthma diagnosis, and either ≥0 (KRONOS) or ≥1 (ETHOS) moderate/severe exacerbations in the prior year. This pooled post hoc analysis evaluated trough forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV) and FEV area under the curve from hours 0 to 4 (AUC) change from baseline over 12-24 weeks, moderate/severe exacerbation rates, and St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total score over 24 weeks with ICS/LAMA/LABA (BGF 320/14.

Budesonide/formoterol turbuhaler vs pMDI salbutamol for acute asthma in outpatient emergency department: a prospective, randomized, open-label study.

J Asthma

December 2024

Pharmacy Department, Institut Perubatan Respiratori, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Background: The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has suggested the need for more studies on inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)-formoterol in the Emergency Department (ED).

Objectives: We aimed to compare the outcomes of budesonide/formoterol (160/4.5 mcg/inhalation) turbuhaler versus pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) salbutamol (100 mcg/puff) in acute asthma in the outpatient ED.
