The CMS delivered its latest projections last week, showing healthcare spending will double in 10 years, with just a small portion of the growth being blamed on aging baby boomers. Many saw gloom in the forecast, but one exec saw a bright side for home healthcare, expected to be among the fastest-growing sectors. "It shows that the industry is being valued as a promising alternative," says Amanda Thomas, left.

Physician Engagement in Addressing Health-Related Social Needs and Burnout.

JAMA Netw Open

December 2024

The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts.

Importance: Previous research suggests that a greater capacity of health care organizations to address patients' health-related social needs (HRSNs) is associated with lower physician burnout. However, individual physician-level engagement in addressing HRSNs has not been fully characterized, and its association with physician burnout remains understudied.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

LMI, New Freedom, PA, USA.

Background: A Medicare Voluntary Advance Directive Framework (Framework) would enable the creation, storage, and sharing of advance directive documents, ensuring end-of-life care appropriately honors the individual and their care wishes, while supporting healthcare teams and family members in making care decisions for their patients and loved ones. With Medicare enrollment reaching over 65 million beneficiaries in 2023, and Alzheimer's becoming one of the most expensive conditions - CMS policy makers have a growing responsibility to improve care quality at end-of-life.

Method: The federal government will be called upon to assist providers in navigating documents and legal variations of approved forms of directives among the different states, and in ensuring privacy standards that keep an individual's health data secure.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: The home environment is where daily activities are performed and older adults with and without cognitive impairment spend most of their time. While home safety is a priority for healthcare providers, there is limited understanding of housing characteristics of older adults with cognitive impairment in the United States and whether they differ for those who live alone or with others.

Methods: We draw on data collected from N = 968 community-living older adults with cognitive impairment who responded to the 2022 National Health and Aging Trends Study, a population-based national survey that comprehensively assesses characteristics of older adults (≥65 years) and their households in a two-hour in-home interview.

Background: Approximately 69%-89% of people with severe mental illnesses, particularly psychosis, experience a treatment gap in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to factors such as low public spending on health and weak healthcare systems. The PIECEs project aims to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a solution-focused resource-oriented approach (DIALOG+) for improving the quality of life and mental well-being of people with psychosis in India and Pakistan.

Methods: The research design of this analysis is an economic evaluation piggybacked on the PIECEs randomised control trial to test the feasibility of DIALOG+ in India and Pakistan.
