A simple geometrical criterion gives experimentally friendly sufficient conditions for entanglement. Its generalization gives a necessary and sufficient condition. It is linked with a family of entanglement identifiers, which is strictly richer than the family of entanglement witnesses.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique for obtaining nano/micro fibers which are able to significantly change the active properties of composite materials and bring in new dimensions to agri-food applications. Composite bio-based packaging materials obtained from whey proteins, functionalized with thyme essential oil (TEO) and reinforced by electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers, represent a promising solution for developing new active food packaging using environmentally friendly materials. The aim of this study is to obtain and characterize one-side-active composite films covered with a PLA fiber mat: (i) WF/G1, WF/G2, and WF/G3 resulting from electrospinning with one needle at different electrospinning times of 90, 150, and 210 min, respectively, and (ii) WF/G4 obtained with two face-to-face needles after 210 min of electrospinning.

Experimental Study on Mechanical Performance of Single-Side Bonded Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plywood for Wood-Based Structures.

Materials (Basel)

In addition to the traditional uses of plywood, such as furniture and construction, it is also widely used in areas that benefit from its special combination of strength and lightness, particularly as a construction material for the production of finishing elements of campervans and yachts. In light of the current need to reduce emissions of climate-damaging gases such as CO, the use of lightweight construction materials is very important. In recent years, hybrid structures made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) and metals have attracted much attention in many industries.

The water-lubricated bearing plays a crucial role in the ship propulsion system, significantly impacting vessel safety. However, under the harsh working conditions of low-speed and heavy-load, the lubrication state of water-lubricated bearings is usually poor, leading to serious friction and wear. To improve the tribological performance of composites and reduce friction, three short fibers (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers, basalt fibers, and bamboo fibers) with the same mass fraction (5%) were added into the melted thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

Ozone/Thiosulfate-Assisted Leaching of Cu and Au from Old Flotation Tailings.

Molecules

December 2024

Department of Environment and Sustainable Development, Singidunum University, Danijelova 32, 11010 Belgrade, Serbia.

The growing demand for metal production promotes the search for alternative sources and novel modalities in metallurgy. Flotation tailings are an important secondary mineral resource; however, they might pose a potential environmental threat due to containing toxic metals. Therefore, proper leaching reagent selection is required.

Bar Adsorptive Microextraction Approach for Trace Determination of Local Anesthetics in Urine Matrices.

Molecules

December 2024

Laboratório de Ciências Forenses e Psicológicas Egas Moniz, Molecular Pathology and Forensic Biochemistry Laboratory, Egas Moniz Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Egas Moniz School of Health and Science, Quinta da Granja, 2829-511 Almada, Portugal.

The present work reports the development, optimization, and validation, of a methodology to determine lidocaine, procaine, tetracaine, and benzocaine in urine matrices. Two extractive preconcentration techniques, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) LC Tips and bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE), were studied and applied to the four target anesthetics, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Several parameters that could affect microextraction and back-extraction were optimized using two different designs of experiments (Box-Behnken and full-factorial) to maximize extraction efficiency from aqueous media.
