Structured illumination can be employed to extend the lateral resolution of wide-field fluorescence microscopy. Since a structured illumination microscopy image is reconstructed from a series of several acquired images, we develop a modified formulation of the imaging response of the microscope and a probabilistic analysis to assess the resolution performance. We use this model to compare the fluorescence imaging performance of structured illumination techniques to confocal microscopy. Specifically, we examine the trade-off between achievable lateral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio when photon shot noise is dominant. We conclude that for a given photon budget, structured illumination invariably achieves better lateral resolution than confocal microscopy.

Stable hollow-type microspheres (MSs) have been fabricated using α-synuclein (αS), an amyloidogenic protein, via freeze-induced protein self-assembly. This assembly process involves three steps: rapid freezing to form spherical protein condensates from αS oligomers, frozen annealing to form a crust on the condensate and freeze-drying to create an interior lumen via the three-dimensional (3D) coffee-stain effect. The crust produced during the frozen-annealing step is a β-sheet-mediated protein structure that is presumed to be created at the quasi-liquid layer of the protein-ice interface and thus contributes to the stability of MSs in aqueous solutions at room temperature without any additional surface stabilization.

Porous CuNi films are promising candidates for electrocatalytic water splitting, with their catalytic performance largely influenced by the crystallographic structure and chemical state. In this study, by employing a magnetic field-controlled bubble template-assisted electrodeposition method, CuNi films with a preferred Ni(111) crystal orientation were synthesized. Moreover, adjusting the magnetic field direction during deposition can affect the degree of preferred orientation and, consequently, the electrochemical activity of the films.

The existence of residual small-size tumors after surgery is a major factor contributing to the high recurrence rate of glioblastoma (GBM). Conventional adjuvant therapeutics involving both chemotherapy and radiotherapy usually exhibit unsatisfactory efficacy and severe side effects. Recently, two-photon photodynamic therapy (TP-PDT), especially excited by the second near-infrared (NIR-II) light, offers an unprecedented opportunity to address this challenge, attributed to its combinational merits of PDT and TP excitation.

(HP) is a freshwater alga known for its ability to accumulate the potent antioxidant astaxanthin, which has extensive applications in aquaculture, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Astaxanthin rapidly accumulates under unfavorable environmental conditions. However, the mechanisms of astaxanthin accumulation under various stress conditions remain unclear.

Oshmarin & Demshin, 1972 is redescribed from the posterior intestine of tropical tortoise (Gmelin, 1789) (Testudines: Geoemydidae) from China. Some characteristic features of the male reproductive system not reported previously are now reported for the present species. These include the presence of two blind diverticula near the mid-region of the seminal vesicle and a small cuticular structure near the opening of the cloaca - which we propose to name the 'scutum.
