When a grating is recorded in a bacteriorhodopsin film by two linear parallel polarized beams together with an auxiliary violet light, the diffraction efficiency has a dependence on the polarization orientation of the violet light as well as its intensity. A method for calculating the diffraction efficiency of gratings in bacteriorhodopsin is proposed based on the two-state photochromic model, considering the saturation effect and the polarization status of all the involved lights. It is found that the polarization orientation of the violet light produces an approximate-cosine and an approximate-sine modulation on the steady-state diffraction efficiency separately at low and high intensities, respectively. The parallel polarized violet light can improve the steady-state diffraction efficiency to a larger degree than the perpendicularly polarized violet light when both are at their optimal intensities. The optimal intensity for the parallel polarized violet light is lower than that of the perpendicular polarized one. Thus, the improvement of the steady-state diffraction efficiency is less sensitive to the intensity of perpendicular polarized violet light than to that of parallel polarized violet light.

This study investigates simple acetylenes substituted with phenylurea as a constant H-bonding unit (Alk-R) and varied hydrophobic units (R = H, Phenyl (Ph), Phenylacetylene (PA), Ph-NMe2) to understand self-assembly properties driven by synergistic non-covalent interactions. Our observations reveal hierarchical self-assembled fibrillar networks with luminescent needles, fibers, and flowers on nano- to micro-meter scales. Subtle changes in substituents led to significant differences: H, Ph, PA, and Ph-NMe2 produced needle-like crystals, dendritic nanofibers, microflakes, and no self-assembly, respectively.

A flexible cotton-based Ag/AgPO/MXene (APMX) ternary composite material was successfully synthesized, serving as a dual-function and reusable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for both sensitive detection and efficient organic dye degradation. The remarkable SERS properties of the composite can be attributed to the combined effects of electromagnetic enhancement by Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs), charge transfer enhancement from AgPO, and the chemical enhancement mechanisms associated with MXene. When employed for the detection of crystal violet (CV), the material exhibits outstanding sensitivity, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 3.

TEMPO-CNF film modified by two-dimension transition metal MXene has certain antibacterial properties. However, the problem of long-lasting stability greatly restricts the feasibility of long-term use of the composite film. Here, we introduced polyaniline (PANI) as a modifying molecule, which was electrostatically adsorbed on the surface of the MXene nanosheets to prevent its self-stacking and delay its oxidation.

The development of integrated multiple signal outputs within a single platform is highly significant for efficient and accurate on-site biomarker detection. Herein, colorimetric/electrochemical dual-mode microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) were designed for portable, visual and accurate dopamine (DA) detection. The dual-mode μPADs, featuring folded structure, integrate a colorimetric layer and an electrochemical layer using wax printing and laser-induced graphene (LIG) pyrolysis techniques, allowing the vertical flow of analyte solution.

An emulsion of silicone oil droplets in aqueous buffer produces a distinctive series of peaks or resonances in the side scatter histogram in a flow cytometer. As many as 12 peaks are observed in the violet-side scatter channel at 405 nm, with half that number observed in the blue side scatter channel at 488 nm. Using the index of refraction of the oil and buffer, the wavelength of light, and the collection angle and gain of the instrument, we assign the peaks to specific diameters at which Mie resonances occur.
