A series of octadecylsilane-modified silicas were prepared by sol-gel and grafting methods. Carbon contents and octadecyl chain conformations were shown to depend on the preparative route. Grafting engenders a low carbon content and a liquid-like chain conformation, while the sol-gel method affords a much higher carbon content and a crystalline conformation. The relationships between the toluene adsorption of the hybrid silicas and their chain conformations, their carbon contents and their textural characteristics are discussed. These sorbents, when used in combination with ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV DRS), can be employed as a rapid screening method for detection of aromatic compounds in water and air environmental matrices.

Hypothesis: Whereas hydrophobic colloidal particles are known to destabilize foams and emulsions stabilized with surfactants, their use for destabilizing Pickering emulsions is unexplored. Pickering emulsions differ from surfactant-stabilized emulsions because they are stabilized with colloidal particles that are adsorbed to the oil/water interface, which provide a steric barrier to droplet coalescence. This can make Pickering emulsions very stable, but it can also make their subsequent destabilization difficult.

Development of the identification method of alkaloid compounds in Amur cork tree as well as not examined so far Oregon grape and European Barberry shrubs are presented. The novel approach to separation of alkaloids was applied and the capillary-high-performance liquid chromatography (capillary-HPLC) system was used, which has never previously been reported for alkaloid-based dyestuffs analysis. Its optimization was conducted with three different stationary phases (unmodified octadecylsilane-bonded silica, octadecylsilane modified with polar groups and silica-bonded pentaflourophenyls) as well as with different solvent buffers.

Octanol-water partitioning is one of the most widely used predictors of hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. Traditional methods for measuring octanol-water partition coefficients (K(ow)), including shake-flasks and generator columns, require hours for equilibration and milliliter quantities of sample solution. These challenges have led to development of smaller-scale methods for measuring K(ow).

SRM 2905 Trace Particulate Explosives was developed to simulate the residues produced by handling plastic and military explosives. A series of nine candidate materials were prepared by coating chromatographic supports with either Composition C-4 (containing RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine) and HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-Tetrazocine)) or TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene). Criteria for selection of the best material for the SRM included: coating efficiency, extractability with organic solvents, thermal storage stability, consistency of the particle size with fingerprint residues, and suitability for calibration of trace explosives detectors.
