Published: June 2008

A 4-year-old Boxer dog with a history of ventricular premature contractions was evaluated for anorexia. An electrocardiogram revealed atrial dissociation and an echocardiogram supported simultaneous mechanical atrial systole with the ectopic atrial electrical activity. This case and the supporting images provide further credence to the existence of atrial dissociation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation is safe and effective, though rare cases of takotsubo syndrome (TTS) have been observed without proven causation. This review synthesizes TTS following AF ablation case reports and series. Until October 2024, PubMed/Medline, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar were searched for AF ablation and TTS case reports and series.

Unlabelled: The modified bicaval anastomosis technique is an orthotopic heart transplantation technique that preserves the posterior wall of the right atrium as a bridging tissue, creating a dual structure of the recipient and donor hearts between the superior and inferior venae cavae. In this report, we present a case with unique electrophysiological findings following heart transplantation using this technique. The patient, who had persistent atrial fibrillation before the procedure, achieved a maintained sinus rhythm afterward.

From the INVICTUS Trial to Current Considerations: It's Not Time to Retire Vitamin K Inhibitors Yet!

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common and usually treated with oral anticoagulants to prevent strokes, where direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) are more effective in reducing certain types of bleeding compared to vitamin K antagonists (VKA).
  • The INVICTUS study showed that the DOAC rivaroxaban was not superior to VKA in preventing serious complications like stroke for patients with rheumatic valvular AF, leading to higher death and drug discontinuation rates in the DOAC group.
  • While VKAs remain the standard treatment for patients with moderate-to-severe mitral stenosis and prosthetic valves, new factor XI inhibitors show promise in reducing bleeding risks and are currently undergoing further testing in AF and

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how structural changes in the heart, specifically fibrosis and endoepicardial dissociation, impact the activation delays during atrial fibrillation.
  • Using a computational model, researchers simulated various arrhythmogenic scenarios to understand how these factors influenced the rate and distribution of electrical activation in the heart.
  • Results showed that increased fibrosis and disconnection between heart layers led to longer activation delays and more frequent short-lived breakthrough events, indicating a complex relationship between structural remodeling and atrial fibrillation dynamics.

Assessing left atrial dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis using LA-LV strain slope.

Aims: Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is an infiltrative disease of the myocardium in which extracellular deposits of amyloid cause progressive cardiac impairment. We aimed to evaluate left atrial (LA) deformation and its association with left ventricular (LV) deformation using LA-LV strain loops in patients with ATTR-CM and patients with LV hypertrophy (LVH). We hypothesized that LA strain in ATTR-CM patients is abnormal and more independent of LV strain, compared to LVH patients.
