Molecular models of low-rank coal containing water, aqua-ionic species, and transition metal aqua-complexes, were optimised using semi-empirical (SE) quantum mechanics; the model was constructed with properties similar to brown coal; 10-20 wt% water was hydrogen bonded to coal oxygen groups, and the remainder was bulk water. Single point self-consistent field (1scf) computations of coal models provided octahedral mono-, and di-nuclear complexes of Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni, but SE computations often provided distorted structures. Models of char were developed by transforming the coal model containing multi-nuclear metal species into char according to pyrolysis chemistry; the composition of char models containing iron oxides was similar to char samples obtained over 250-800 degrees C. Density functional theory (DFT) optimisation of char models with metal clusters provided low energy configurations of disordered structures with a shallow energy minimum. SE and DFT calculations of char models containing metal clusters were conducted for mechanisms for H2 and CO formation from pyrolysis and iron-catalysed steam gasification; the active site for gasification was [Fe-C] and its accessibility to H2O was related to the configuration of the char model. The major steps in iron-catalysed steam gasification were chemi-adsorption of water on [Fe-C], hydrogen abstraction, and oxygen transfer.

Globally, fish have been severely affected by the widespread, chronic degradation of fresh waters, with a substantial proportion of species declining in abundance or range in recent decades. This has especially been the case in densely populated countries with an industrial heritage and intensive agriculture, where the majority of river catchments have been affected by deteriorations in water quality and changes in land use. This study used a spatially and temporally extensive dataset, encompassing 16,124 surveys at 1180 sites representing a wide range of river typologies and pressures, to examine changes in the fish populations of England's rivers over four decades (1980s-2010s).

Background: Power-controlled radiofrequency ablation with irrigated-tip catheters has been the norm for ventricular ablation for almost 2 decades. New catheter technology has recently integrated more accurate tissue temperature sensing enabling temperature-controlled irrigated ablation. We aimed to investigate the in vivo ablation parameters and lesion formation characteristics in ventricular myocardium using a novel temperature-controlled radiofrequency catheter.

Genetic summary data are broadly accessible and highly useful, including for risk prediction, causal inference, fine mapping, and incorporation of external controls. However, collapsing individual-level data into summary data, such as allele frequencies, masks intra- and inter-sample heterogeneity, leading to confounding, reduced power, and bias. Ultimately, unaccounted-for substructure limits summary data usability, especially for understudied or admixed populations.

Pathogens that infect multiple host species have an increased capacity to cause extinctions through parasite-mediated apparent competition. Given unprecedented and continuing losses of biodiversity due to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), the causative fungus of the amphibian skin disease chytridiomycosis, a robust understanding of the mechanisms driving cross-species infection dynamics is essential. Here, we used stage-structured, susceptible-infected compartmental models to explore drivers of Bd-mediated apparent competition between two sympatric amphibians, the critically endangered Litoria spenceri and the non-threatened Litoria lesueurii.

Climate change and biological invasions are affecting natural ecosystems globally. The effects of these stressors on native species' biogeography have been studied separately, but their combined effects remain overlooked. Here, we develop a framework to assess how climate change influences both the range and niche overlap of native and non-native species using ecological niche models.
