Published: June 2008

Background: Even though all immunoglobulin intravenous (IGIV) end products have high IgG concentrations, variations in manufacturing processes lead to unique product characteristics.

Objective: Solvent/detergent-treated IGIV (IGIV-S/D) liquid 10% (Gammagard or Kiovig liquid) is one of the newer products, and this article will discuss and compare its efficacy, safety, tolerability and effect on patient care.

Methods: The search terms 'immunoglobulin,' 'IGIV,' 'IVIG,' and 'liquid' were entered into PubMed/Medline and Google for the literature search in preparation of this manuscript. Additional references were screened from researched literature.

Results/conclusion: Gammagard liquid 10% has shown significant activity in primary immunodeficiency and immune thrombocytopenic purpura. It is a sugar- and sodium-free product with improved safety, tolerability and convenience. Overall, Gammagard liquid is a valuable addition to available therapies that has utility in life-threatening and complicated diseases, and its use will continue to grow.

The Glycosylation of Serum IgG Antibodies in Post-COVID-19 and Post-Vaccination Patients.

The signature of human serum IgG glycosylation is critical in the defense against pathogens. Alterations of IgG N-glycome were associated with COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) severity, although knowledge on the response to vaccination is limited. IgG N-glycome was analyzed in this study in post-COVID-19 and post-vaccination patients to reveal potential glycosylation-based alterations using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC-UPLC) with fluorescence (FLR) and mass-spectrometric (MS) detection.

Phospholipase A2 receptor 1 (PLA2R1) exists in many animals and plays an important role in membranous nephropathy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a PLA2R1 knock-in rat model with repaired kidney function to study the molecular mechanisms of membranous nephropathy. We constructed the PLA2R1 knockout [PLA2R1(-)] model and PLA2R1 knock in [PLA2R1(+)] model in rats.

Theories predicted that shear promotes desorption, but due to the presence of factors such as aggregation effects, it is difficult to observe how shear influences the adsorption and desorption of individual protein molecules. In this study, we employed high-throughput single-molecule tracking and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how shear flow affects the adsorption kinetics of plasma proteins (including human serum albumin, immunoglobulin G, and fibrinogen) at solid-liquid interfaces. Over the studied shear rate range of 0 - 10 s, shear stress did not trigger the protein desorption.

Development of Citric-Acid-Modified Cellulose Monolith for Enriching Glycopeptides.

Prior to mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, pretreatment of low-abundance glycopeptides is vital for identifying protein glycosylation. In this study, we fabricated an environmentally friendly citric-acid-modified cellulose monolith (CCM) characterized by a coral-like porous structure and high-density hydrophilic groups using a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The CCM production leverages biomass resources, specifically cellulose and citric acid, utilizing TIPS to synthesize continuous porous materials through a straightforward heating and cooling process of polymer solutions.

Parasitic infections during pregnancy in Gabon affect glycosylation patterns of maternal and child antibodies.

Antibody glycosylation patterns can affect antibody functionality and thereby contribute to protection against invading pathogens. During pregnancy, maternal antibodies can be transferred through the placenta and contribute to modulating both the mother's and her child's immune responses. Although several studies of IgG glycosylation during pregnancy have been carried out, very few cohorts studied were from sub-Saharan Africa, where exposure to microorganisms and parasites is high.
