Objective: To report two cases of glandular odontogenic cyst and examine its cytokeratin 18,19 expression.
Methods: Two cases of glandular odontogenic cyst were reported and studied. The cytokeratin 18, 19 expression in these two cases were also investigated using immuno-histochemical staining as well as in the situ hybridization of the cyst epithelium.
Results: Histo-pathological examination revealed that ciliated columnar cells, squamous cells and low-columnar cells were found in the superficial layer of the lining epithelium. Several minor salivary glands, mainly composed of seromucous cells were observed near the satellite cyst. CK18 were expressed in all layers of the lining epithelium of varying intensity. CK18 was negative in lining epithelium of the daughter cyst, but CK19 was positive. CK18-mRNA was expressed in all the layers of the lining epithelium, the salivary glands and daughter cysts.
Conclusions: Histological features and CK18 expression may be indicative of the possibility of salivary glandular and odontogenic differentiation.

A case of 43-year-old female presenting a mandibular surgical ciliated cyst after 16 years of an orthognathic surgery, consisting of a combination of Le Fort I osteotomy and genioplasty, is reported. The cystic lesion was enucleated, and the histopathological analysis showed a cystic cavity lined by pseudostratified columnar respiratory-type epithelium presenting ciliated and mucous cells supported by fibrous connective tissue without inflammation.

Imbalance of airway proteases and antiproteases has been implicated in diseases such as COPD and environmental exposures including cigarette smoke and ozone. To initiate infection, endogenous proteases are commandeered by respiratory viruses upon encountering the airway epithelium. The airway proteolytic environment likely contains redundant antiproteases and proteases with diverse catalytic mechanisms, however a proteomic profile of these enzymes and inhibitors in airway samples has not been reported.

The surgical ciliated cyst is a newly added entity under the cysts of the jaws in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours (2022). It is preceded by a prior surgery to the jaw many years before its diagnosis. A 53-year-old Chinese female, who had undergone cleft lip and palate repair followed by orthognathic surgery before the age of 20, was referred for management of an incidentally found cyst in the left maxilla.
