Phaeohyphomycosis Due to Verruconis gallopava: Rare Indolent Pulmonary Infection or Severe Cerebral Fungal Disease?

Mycopathologia

November 2024

Laboratoire de Parasitologie-Mycologie, Service de Parasitologie-Mycologie, AP-HP, Hôpital Saint-Louis, Université Paris-Cité, 1 Avenue Claude Vellefaux, 75010, Paris, France.

Introduction: Phaeohyphomycoses are uncommon and poorly understood opportunistic fungal infections, characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from localized skin lesions to disseminated disease. Most frequent genera are Alternaria, Cladophialophora, Exophiala or Curvularia. Less common ones, such as Verruconis gallopava, initially described as responsible of encephalitis of turkeys, pose significant challenges for diagnosis and treatment.

Economic evaluation of isavuconazole for suspected invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in Canada.

Expert Rev Pharmacoecon Outcomes Res

July 2022

Immunocompromised Host Infectious Diseases Service, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Background: Invasive mold infections (IMI) directly impact life expectancy, especially with delayed therapy. Among IMI, aspergillosis (IA) is more common than mucormycosis (IM), resulting in IA-targeted empirical treatment with voriconazole for suspected invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), despite IM ineffectiveness. Recently, isavuconazole was approved in Canada for IA and IM.

An Unusual and Rare Presentation of Pulmonary Aspergillosis: Endobronchial Aspergilloma.

May 2021

Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, College Station, TX, USA.

Aspergillosis is a wide spectrum of the disease process that is caused by the fungus . Endobronchial aspergilloma is a very rare type of aspergillosis which is not yet included in the classification of aspergillosis. Due to its rare nature and a limited number of cases, there are no current treatment guidelines.

Purpose: Isolated aspergillus laryngitis is rare and often diagnosed after surgical excision or biopsy for a suspected premalignant or malignant pathology. Unlike other systemic or localized aspergillosis, there are no specific guidelines for isolated laryngeal aspergillosis. Our experience of dealing with a wide variety of isolated laryngeal aspergillosis showed that this entity is very responsive to medical therapy, making extensive debridement (as often carried out in surgically accessible aspergillosis) unnecessary as it would invariably lead to long-term dysphonia.

Chronic granulomatous 'Aspergillus lung mass'.

Monaldi Arch Chest Dis

September 2020

Department of Microbiology, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.

The diverse clinicopathological spectrum of pulmonary aspergillosis is a consequence of varying levels of invasiveness of this ubiquitous fungus, which largely depends on the host immune response and pre-existing lung disease. The clinical presentation of pulmonary aspergillosis spans a wide spectrum from hypersensitivity to life threatening angio-invasive and disseminated disease. We report the case of a young immunocompetent male with no underlying lung disease, who presented with an incidentally detected 'infective mass' lesion in the lung associated with minimal respiratory symptoms.
