Background: In Japan, chemotherapeutic agents that have been approved for the treatment of esophageal cancer include cisplatin, nedaplatin, 5-fluorouracil, vindesine, and docetaxel. We retrospectively investigated the efficacy and toxicity of a combination of nedaplatin plus vindesine, or docetaxel alone, for patients with unresectable or recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus refractory to prior chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil plus platinum.

Methods: Nedaplatin was administered at 90 mg/m(2) intravenously on day 1, and vindesine was administered at 3 mg/m(2) intravenously on days 1 and 8 every 28 days. Docetaxel 60 mg/m(2) or 70 mg/m(2) was administered intravenously every 21 days. We analyzed the response rate, overall survival time, progression-free survival time, and toxicity in 24 patients treated with nedaplatin plus vindesine and 28 patients treated with docetaxel.

Results: In patients treated with nedaplatin plus vindesine, the response rate of the 13 patients with measurable lesions was 8% (1/13), the median progression-free survival time was 1.8 months, and the median survival time was 5.5 months. In patients treated with docetaxel, the response rate of the 17 patients with measurable lesions was 18% (3/17), the median progression-free survival time was 2.1 months, and the median survival time was 5.1 months. The most frequent toxicity was neutropenia (grade 4; 13% in the group with nedaplatin plus vindesine and 50% in the docetaxel group), and febrile neutropenia (grade 3; 4% and 18%, respectively).

Conclusion: The efficacy of the two regimens for unresectable or recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus refractory to chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil plus platinum was unsatisfactory. New, more effective therapies are needed.

Introduction: The present study aimed to explore the epidemiologic threats and factors associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated mucormycosis (CAM) epidemic that emerged in Egypt during the second COVID-19 wave. The study also aimed to explore the diagnostic features and the role of surgical interventions of CAM on the outcome of the disease in a central referral hospital.

Methodology: The study included 64 CAM patients from a referral hospital for CAM and a similar number of matched controls from COVID-19 patients who did not develop CAM.

Introduction: Inflammation plays a role in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pathophysiology and anti-inflammatory drugs may help reduce the disease severity. Levamisole is an anthelmintic drug with immunomodulatory and possible antiviral effects. This study aimed to evaluate the role of levamisole in the treatment of patients with COVID-19.

Background: In this study, we aimed to explore the association between baseline and early changes in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the 30-day mortality rate in patients having anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5)-positive dermatomyositis with interstitial lung disease (DM-ILD).

Methods: Overall, 263 patients with anti-MDA5 DM-ILD from four centers in China were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of baseline NLR on the 30-day mortality rate in patients with anti-MDA5-positive DM-ILD.

Objective: The effect of sodium intake on atrial fibrillation (AF)/atrial flutter (AFL), with respect to sex and age, has yet to be elucidated. This study aims to compare long-term trends in AF/AFL death and disability due to high sodium intake in China from 1990 to 2019.

Methods: We utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease study to assess the mortality and disability burden of AF/AFL attributable to high sodium intake (> 5 g/d) in China from 1990 to 2019.

Background: Evidence is lacking on whether chronic pain is related to the risk of cancer mortality. This study seeks to unveil the association between chronic pain and all-cause, cancer, as well as non-cancer death in cancer patients based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database.

Methods: Cancer survivors aged at least 20 (n = 1369) from 3 NHANES (1999-2004) cycles were encompassed.
