Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) are one of the most promising glycolipid biosurfactants produced by yeast strains of the genus Pseudozyma. In this study, the aqueous-phase behavior of a new monoacetyl MEL derivative, 1-O-beta-(2',3'-di-O-alka(e)noyl-6'-O-acetyl-d-mannopyranosyl)-d-erythritol (MEL-B), was investigated using polarized optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The present MEL-B was found to self-assemble into a lamellar (L(alpha)) phase over remarkably wide concentration and temperature ranges. According to SAXS measurement, the interlayer spacing (d) was estimated to be almost constant (about 4.7 nm) at the low MEL-B concentration (

Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) are glycolipid biosurfactants produced by various yeasts. MEL producers produce mainly di-acylated MELs (consisting of two fatty acid chains). Among them, is a di-acylated MEL-B (d-MEL-B) producer.

Background Human African trypanocide resistance (HATr) is a challenge for the eradication of Human African Trypansomiaisis (HAT) following the widespread emergence of increased monotherapy drug treatment failures against Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and T. b. rhodesiense that are associated with changes in pathogen receptors.

Mannosylerythritol lipid-B (MEL-B), which comprises ester-bonded hydrophilic ME and hydrophobic fatty acids, is a bio-surfactant with various unique properties, including antimicrobial activity against most gram-positive bacteria. The gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus is a causative pathogen of dairy cattle mastitis, which results in considerable economic loss in the dairy industry. Here, we demonstrate the efficacy of MEL-B as a disinfectant against bovine-derived S.

Light mainly affects animal reproductive performance through the hypothalamus- pituitary-gonadal axis, but the specific regulating mechanism is not yet clear in duck. To reveal the effects of light on the laying performance of ducks and its possible regulatory mechanisms, Shanma ducks at 52 weeks age were divided into three group treated with different photoperiods of 16 hr (control group), 24 hr (long-photoperiod group, LP), and 8 hr (short-photoperiod group, SP). Laying performance, endocrine-related hormones and gene expression of three groups were compared.

We report serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and follow-up in a case of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) presenting with limited lesions followed by early and complete resolution. We searched the literature for documented cases and reviewed MRI findings before treatment. A 30-year-old Lebanese man, who had lived in Gabon for six years, presented with a two-year history of rash, anorexia, weight loss, arthralgia, paresthesia, and hypersomnia.
