Arterio-ureteral fistula is a rare condition difficult to diagnose. The usual presentation associates acute paroxysmal hematuria with well-identified history and risk factors. We report the case of an 84-year-old man with a life-threatening complication of an ilio-ureteral fistula complicating an anastomotic iliac pseudoaneurysm after prothetic iliofemoral surgery, due to a fungic infection by Candida. After reporting the clinical case and the emergency surgical treatment, we present a review of the literature.

Background: Lysinuric protein intolerance is a rare autosomal disorder caused by mutations in the Slc7a7 gene that lead to impaired transport of neutral and basic amino acids. The gold standard treatment for lysinuric protein intolerance involves a low-protein diet and citrulline supplementation. While this approach partially improves cationic amino acid plasma levels and alleviates some symptoms, long-term treatment is suggested to be detrimental and may lead to life-threatening complications characterized by a wide range of hematological and immunological abnormalities.

We report on a fatal case of invasive fungal rhinosinusitis with after lung transplantation. After endoscopic treatment and adjuvant medical therapy with isavuconazole, caspofungin and an investigational antifungal drug, there was a good clinical response with absence of endoscopic and radiographic disease. However, the patient developed disease recurrence, with signs of intracranial involvement on MRI, for which urgent endoscopic sinus surgery was performed and isavuconazole was restarted.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by severe infection and often complicates acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury (ALI) due to the collapse of the oxidative and inflammatory balance induced by microbial pathogens, including lipopolysaccharides (LPS). In sepsis-related ARDS/ALI, NADPH oxidase (NOX) and toll-like receptors (TLR) in neutrophils and macrophages are key players in initiating oxidative and inflammatory imbalances. Although NOX and TLR activation has been linked to carbon monoxide (CO), the mechanism by which CO affects sepsis-related ARDS/ALI through NOX and TLR remains unknown.

Background: Scalp reconstruction is a challenging field for plastic surgeons. In case of large or complex defects, microsurgical-free flaps are usually required. Reconstructive failure can result in high morbidity and in some cases be life-threatening.

Intramural pregnancy (IMP) is an extremely rare form of ectopic pregnancy (EP), typically associated with previous uterine trauma, adenomyosis, or assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as embryo transfer (ET). Despite its potentially life-threatening nature, the absence of definitive preoperative diagnostic criteria for IMP complicates its early detection and management, especially in patients without known risk factors. Additionally, management becomes more challenging when there is an elevated risk of hemorrhage.
