The Authors report a case of paracoccidioidomycosis in a Surui Indian patient from the state of Rondonia, Brazilian Amazon. The subject is an adult male, having been diagnosed on the basis of mycologic, serologic, and radiographic exams. The prescribed therapy was sulphamethoxazole 800 mg associated with trimethoprim 160 mg every 12 hours. A reevaluation of the patient conducted six months after the beginning of chemotherapy indicated overall improvement of his physical condition and of the radiologic picture, negativeness of the test of precipitin in capillary tube, and positiveness of the skin test with paracoccidioidin. The Authors also reviewed the cases of paracoccidioidomycosis described in the region, especially among the Surui Indian population.

Objectives: We report, for the first time, the distribution of four no-function NAT2 single nucleotide polymorphisms and inferred NAT2 acetylator phenotypes in three indigenous groups (Munduruku, Paiter-Suruí, and Yanomami), living in reservation areas in the Brazilian Amazon.
Methods: Two hundred and seventy-six participants from three indigenous groups (92 for each group) were included and genotyped for four NAT2 polymorphisms (rs1801279, rs1801280, rs1799930, and rs1799931) by the TaqMan system. Minor Allele Frequency (MAF) was determined and NAT2 acetylator phenotypes were inferred.

The diversity of the five single nucleotide polymorphisms located in genes of the TP53 pathway (TP53, rs1042522; MDM2, rs2279744; MDM4, rs1563828; USP7, rs1529916; and LIF, rs929271) were studied in a total of 282 individuals belonging to Quechua, Aymara, Chivay, Cabanaconde, Yanke, Taquile, Amantani, Anapia, Uros, Guarani Ñandeva, and Guarani Kaiowá populations, characterized as Native American or as having a high level (> 90%) of Native American ancestry. In addition, published data pertaining to 100 persons from five other Native American populations (Surui, Karitiana, Maya, Pima, and Piapoco) were analyzed. The populations were classified as living in high altitude (≥ 2,500 m) or in lowlands (< 2,500 m).

Indigenous peoples in Brazil are experiencing rapid epidemiologic and nutritional transition, with non-communicable diseases such as hypertension emerging in their health profile. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 9 Suruí Indian villages (n-251 subjects) in Rondônia, Brazilian Amazon, in 2005, in order to assess blood pressure levels in adults (>20 years of age), as well as to investigate its possible relationship with nutritional and socioeconomic status (SES). Mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were higher in men.

JC polyomavirus (JCV) is a member of the Polyomaviridae family. It presents a tropism to kidney cells, and the infection occurs in a variety of human population groups of different ethnic background. The present study investigated the prevalence of JCV infection among human populations from the Brazilian Amazon region, and describes the molecular and phylogenetic features of the virus.
