Background: During surgery for left colonic and rectal cancers, the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) can be ligated either at its aortic origin (high tie) or below the origin of the left colic artery (low tie). There is no consensus as to which method should be employed.

Methods: We searched Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane collaboration, and National Guidelines Clearinghouse databases and undertook a systematic review on the use of IMA high tie during curative resections for left colonic and rectal cancers and its impact on patient survival, peri-operative morbidity and mortality, and lymph node retrieval rates.

Results: Sixteen studies were eligible for systematic review, including one randomized controlled study, 7 quasi-experimental studies, and 8 retrospective cohort studies. Data on 7,649 patients were analyzed, of whom 4,847 underwent high ligation of the IMA. Despite a trend for improved survival in patients in whom high tie was employed, there is no conclusive evidence to support this. Mortality and morbidity, including anastomotic leak and autonomic nerve injury rates, are similar, while lymph node retrieval is improved.

Conclusions: Although there is no undisputable evidence of improved survival, the use of IMA high tie contributes to improved lymph node retrieval rates and accuracy of tumour staging.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging disinfectant known to be highly effective against various microorganisms. However, the capability of PAA to eliminate spores under different conditions and its application in liquid and gaseous forms remain unclear. Here, we aimed to develop a stabilized single-composite PAA and evaluate its disinfection efficacy in both liquid and gaseous form against suspended or surface-coated spores under varying temperature and humidity conditions.

A AuNSs@PB@Ag-Apt surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe has been developed by embedding Prussian blue (PB) between Au core and Ag shell. The PB SERS probe illustrates strong SERS activity in the Raman silent region of 2070 cm, and has a zero background signal, ensuring high sensitivity for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

Planting native flora is a popular conservation strategy for pollinators. When searching for native plants, consumers may encounter cultivars of native plants, which can have different phenotypic traits than plants found in wild populations ("wild-type native plants"). Previous research evaluating pollinator visitation to wild-type native plants and native cultivars has yielded mixed results, in terms of whether their visitation rates are similar or distinct.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital, abnormally short, thickened, or tight lingual frenulum that restricts tongue mobility, which may impair the development of the lower face morphology, namely the occlusion and skeleton. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether and how the lingual frenotomy benefits the occlusion and lower face skeleton development. The authors, independently and in duplication, performed searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, Web of Science, and Embase, introducing the following keywords: tongue tie, ankyloglossia, and short lingual frenum/frenulum, combined with malocclusion, lower face skeleton, and hyoid bone.

The metastable β-Ti21S alloy exhibits a lower elastic modulus than Ti-6Al-4V ELI while maintaining high mechanical strength and ductility. To address stress shielding, this study explores the integration of lattice structures within prosthetics, which is made possible through additive manufacturing. Continuous adhesion between the implant and bone is essential; therefore, auxetic bow-tie structures with a negative Poisson's ratio are proposed for regions under tensile stress, while Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures with a positive Poisson's ratio are recommended for areas under compressive stress.
