Conductance spectra of doped silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays were measured from 0.5 to 50 GHz at temperatures between 4 and 293 K. For arrays consisting of 11 to >10(4) SiNWs, the conductance was found to increase with frequency as f(s), with 0.25 < s < 0.45, consistent with behavior found universally in disordered systems. A possible cause is disorder from Si/SiO x interface states dominating the conductance due to the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanowires.

An electro- and optically favorable quaternary nanocomposite film was produced by solution-casting nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT/PSS). Based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) observations, the synthesized NiO NPs have a cubic phase and a diameter between 10 and 45 nm. The complexity and interactions observed through XRD patterns, UV-visible spectra, and FTIR measurements suggest that the NPs are not just dispersed within the polymer matrix, but are interacting with it, leading to enhanced dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity.

Qualitative and quantitative detection of sex-targeted hormones in chicken embryo based on terahertz spectroscopy and metamaterial technology.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

December 2024

Intelligent Equipment Research Center, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Beijing 100097, China. Electronic address:

Gender identification of chick embryos at the early stages of incubation is of significant importance to poultry industry. Existing studies showed reproductive hormone concentrations are associated with gender of chick embryos. Accurate detection of reproductive hormone concentration can assist in gender identification.

Microplastics (MPs) in nature inevitably undergo various aging processes and may exhibit varied interfacial interactions with the coexisted contaminants. Here several discarded disposable polyethylene and polypropylene plastic packaging materials were collected and employed as the raw materials of MPs, and the effects of stimulated UV irradiation and microbial colonization on the variations of surface physicochemical characteristics, including biofilm content, oxygen-containing functional groups, oxygen/carbon ratio, hydrophilicity and surface charge properties were explored. Simultaneously, the adsorption behavior of each MPs on the representative cationic dye crystal violet (CV), as well as the influences of salinity and pH of CV solution, was investigated.

Electronic band evolution between Lieb and kagome nanoribbons.

Nanotechnology

January 2025

Departamento de Física, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Campus do Pici, Bloco 922, 60455-900, Fortaleza, 60455-900, BRAZIL.

We investigate the electronic properties of nanoribbons made out of monolayer Lieb, transition, and kagome lattices using the tight-binding model with a generic Hamiltonian. It allows us to map the evolutionary stages of the interconvertibility process between Lieb and kagome nanoribbons by means of only one control parameter. Results for the energy spectra, the density of states, and spatial probability density distributions are discussed for nanoribbons with three types of edges: straight, bearded, and asymmetric.

Background: Although amyloid deposition in brain is one of the hallmark pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the upstream events and its molecular environment in AD brain remain largely unknown. Recent advances in analytical methods such as mass spectrometry can provide the cutting-edge tools to unveil the AD pathogenesis at molecular and atomic level.

Method: In order to gain the comprehensive information about AD pathology at molecular level, postmortem brain sections of AD patients were analyzed by the hybrid molecular imaging methods composed of the conventional histological analyses, matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) for small molecules, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) imaging for metals, and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) imaging for elements.
