Objective: The vibratory source for voicing in children with dysphonia is classified into three categories including a glottal vibratory source (GVS) observed in those with vocal lesions or hyperfunction; supraglottal vibratory sources (SGVS) observed secondary to laryngeal airway injuries, malformations, or reconstruction surgeries; and a combination of both glottal and supraglottal vibratory sources called mixed vibratory source (MVS). This study evaluated the effects of vibratory source on three primary dimensions of voice quality (breathiness, roughness, and strain) in children with GVS, SGVS, and MVS using single-variable matching tasks and computational measures obtained from bio-inspired auditory models.

Methods: A total of 44 dysphonic voice samples from children aged 4-11 years were selected.

Development and characterization of ferret tracheal injury and cell engraftment model.

Front Med (Lausanne)

April 2023

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • The research explores the use of a novel ferret tracheal injury and cell engraftment model to study airway biology, highlighting a gap in the use of such models compared to traditional animal models.
  • The study introduces a whole-mount staining protocol that reveals detailed structural anatomy of the airway epithelium and submucosal glands, offering advantages over traditional 2D tissue sections.
  • A novel 3D-printed culture chamber facilitates live imaging and cell differentiation at an air-liquid interface, aiming to improve cell-based therapies for pulmonary diseases.

Objective: Speech production MRI benefits from lower magnetic fields due to reduced off-resonance effects at air-tissue interfaces and from the use of dedicated receiver coils due to higher SNR and parallel imaging capability. Here we present a custom designed upper airway coil for H imaging at 0.55 Tesla and evaluate its performance in comparison with a vendor-provided prototype 16-channel head/neck coil.

Primary cultures of the human airway epithelium (AE) cells are an indispensable tool in studies of pathophysiology of genetic and environmental pulmonary diseases, including cystic fibrosis (CF), primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Air-liquid interface (ALI) culture is the best method to follow the differentiation of ciliated cells, whose dysfunction forms the basis of PCD. Here, we used custom-designed Taqman Low Density Array (TLDA), qRT-PCR-based assay, to analyze expression of 14 AE genes in cells from healthy donors, cultured in ALI settings using Pneumacult medium, with the focus on genes involved in cilia differentiation and in PCD pathogenesis.
