A comprehensive analysis of erectile dysfunction prevalence and the impact of prostate conditions on ED among US adults: evidence from NHANES 2001-2004.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

January 2025

The Second Department of Infectious Disease, Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain penile erection sufficient for intercourse. While previous research suggests a potential link between ED and prostate pathologies, the association between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, prostatic cancer (PCa), and ED remains to be elucidated.

Methods: Data from participants (40-80 years, n=2225) were extracted from the NHANES 2001-2004 for this observational study.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and its related lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are commonly observed among aging males and have a substantial effect on quality of life. Metabolic syndrome, with a specific focus on obesity, is believed to play a role in the development of BPH. This study intends to explore the relationship between several obesity-related metrics, including the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI), and LUTS/BPH within a national cohort of Chinese men.

Purpose Of Review: The role of the microbiome in prostate cancer is an emerging subject of research interest. Certain lifestyle factors, such as obesity and diet, can also impact the microbiome, which has been implicated in many diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. However, this link has yet to be explored in detail in the context of prostate cancer.
