Advancements in high-throughput sequencing and associated bioinformatics methods have significantly expanded the RNA virus repertoire, including novel viruses with highly divergent genomes encoding "orphan" proteins that apparently lack homologous sequences. This absence of homologs in routine sequence similarity search complicates their taxonomic classification and raises a fundamental question: Do these orphan viral genomes represent viruses? In 2022, an orphan viral genome encoding a large polyprotein was identified in alfalfa () and thrips (), and named Snake River alfalfa virus (SRAV). SRAV was initially proposed as an uncommon flavi-like virus identified in a plant host distantly related to family .

Comprehensive genome annotation of Trilocha varians, a new model species of Lepidopteran insects.

Sci Data

January 2025

Gakushuin University, Faculty of Science, Department of Life Science, Mejiro 1-5-1, Toshima-ku, Tokyo, 171-8588, Japan.

Trilocha varians is a member of the bombycid moths. Since T. varians has a considerably shorter generation period than the prevailing model species, Bombyx mori, this species would be a novel model insect in Lepidoptera.

Apprehending siRNA Machinery and Gene Silencing in Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer, Leucinodes orbonalis.

Arch Insect Biochem Physiol

January 2025

Division of Genomic Resources, ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources, Bengaluru, India.

RNA interference (RNAi) technology is widely used in gene functional studies and has been shown to be a promising next generation alternative for insect pest management. To understand the efficiency of RNAi machinery in Leucinodes orbonalis (L. orbonalis) Guenee, a destructive pest of eggplant, core RNAi pathway genes Argonaute-2, Dicer-2, Loquacious, and Sid-1 were mined from the transcriptome and characterized.

Invasive lung myofibroblasts are the main cause of tissue remodeling in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). A key mechanism contributing to this important feature is aberrant crosstalk between the abnormal/injured lung epithelium and pulmonary fibroblasts. Here, we demonstrate that lungs from patients with IPF and from mice with bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis (PF) are characterized by the induction of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) overexpression in epithelial cells.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the relationship between m6A demethylase ALKBH5 and long noncoding RNA TUG1 (TUG1), as well as their effects on proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis in gastric cancer (GC) cells.

Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was utilized to analyze the relative expression levels of ALKBH5, TUG1, and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). Survival analyses of TUG1, ALKBH5, and VEGFA were performed using the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and Kaplan-Meier databases.
