Understanding the community structure of the lower respiratory tract microbiome is crucial for elucidating its roles in respiratory tract diseases. However, there are few studies about this topic due to the difficulty in obtaining microbial samples from both healthy and disease individuals. Here, using 744 high-depth metagenomic sequencing data of lower respiratory tract microbial samples from 675 well-phenotyped pigs, we constructed a lung microbial gene catalog containing the largest scale of 10,031,593 nonredundant genes to date, 44.

In the post-pandemic era, research on respiratory diseases should refocus on pathogens other than the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Respiratory pathogens, highly infectious to children, with to different modes of infection, such as single-pathogen infections and co-infections. Understanding the seasonal patterns of these pathogens, alongside identifying single infections and co-infections and their impact on the pediatric immune status, is crucial for clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in children.

Respiratory diseases, such as pleurisy and pneumonia, cause significant health and economic losses in pig production. This study evaluated 867 finishing pigs from a farm with a history of respiratory issues, using macroscopic lesion scoring (SPES and CVPC), histopathological analysis, qPCR diagnostics, and economic modeling. Severe pleurisy (scores 3 and 4) was observed in 42.
