The optimization of the optical scheme design of a mode-mismatched dual-beam thermal-lens spectrometer for differential (dual-cell) measurements in a far-field mode using diffraction thermal-lens theory is carried out. A criterion for an expert estimation of the quality of the spectrometer design for differential thermal-lens measurements in analytical chemistry (sensitivity, low limits of detection, and quantification) is also developed. The theoretical calculations agree well with previous papers on differential thermal lensing. Using the example of iron(II) tris-(1,10-phenanthrolinate), it is shown that the blank signal compensation in differential thermal lens spectrometry provides a decrease in the limit of detection by an order of magnitude compared to the decrease in single-cell measurements. Using an artificial two-component mixture of ferroin and potassium dichromate, it is shown that dual-beam differential thermal lens spectrometry makes it possible to determine trace components against 900-fold excess amounts of interfering substances.

The performance of nanofluids is largely determined by their thermophysical properties. Optimizing these properties can significantly enhance nanofluid performance. This study introduces a hybrid strategy based on computational intelligence to determine the optimal conditions for ternary hybrid nanofluids.

This study explores the formulation and characterization of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based composite hydrogels synthesized through solid-state crosslinking. Comprehensive assessments were conducted on their physicochemical properties, leachables, and immunogenicity. Swelling experiments demonstrated that the incorporation of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) enhanced water retention, while chitosan had a minimal effect on swelling behavior.

A novel hierarchical porous biochar based on ZIF-8 volatile hard template with high-efficiency electrochemical sensing performance for trace determination of Ponceau 4R.

Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Improved Variety Breeding and Efficient Utilization of Native Tree Species 2024SSY04093, College of Forestry, East China Woody Fragrance and Flavor Engineering Research Center of NF&GA, Jiangxi Agricultural University, Nanchang, 330045, People's Republic of China.

A convenient method is proposed using a heat-treatable volatile template to prepare hierarchical porous biochar (HPB). Litsea cubeba leaves and ZIF-8 served as carbon source and volatile hard template, respectively. The good compatibility between ZIF-8 and biomass facilitated their uniform dispersion, and the thermal decomposition of ZIF-8 created abundant pores in the HPB.

Thermal Behavior of -Octanol and Related Ether Alcohols.

J Chem Eng Data

January 2025

Institute of Physical Chemistry, Technical University Darmstadt, Peter-Grünberg-Straße 8, Darmstadt D-64287, Germany.

The thermal behavior of -octanol and related ether alcohols has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The melting point, heat of fusion, and isobaric heat capacities of -octanol obtained from the DSC measurements are in good agreement with literature values. The ether alcohols display kinetic barriers for forming a solid phase during cooldown.

Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is a widely produced bio-based polymer known for its biodegradability and renewability, but its brittleness, low heat resistance, and weak mechanical properties limit its broader use. To address these challenges, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) were extracted from dissolving pulp using TEMPO oxidation and high-pressure homogenization. These TOCNF were modified with silane to reduce hydrophilicity and improve compatibility with PLA.
