Objectives: To determine whether infants exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) having the interleukin 4 (IL-4) or interleukin 13 (IL-13) gene polymorphisms were at increased risk of wheezing.
Study Design: A birth cohort of 758 infants was evaluated annually by a questionnaire, physical examination, and skin prick testing. DNA samples from 560 children were genotyped for IL-4 C-589T and IL-13 C-1112T. The relationship of ETS exposure and genotype with the outcome of wheezing was analyzed.
Results: At the time of evaluation, mean age was 13.4 +/- 2.2 months. The prevalence of sensitization was 29%, and wheezing without a cold was 26.2%. The interaction of ETS exposure and the CT/TT genotypes for IL-4 C-589T showed a significant association with wheezing (odds ratio: 10.84; 95% confidence interval: 1.12-104.64, P = .04) in African-American infants.
Conclusions: In African-American infants with a family history of atopy, the interaction of ETS and IL-4 C-589T demonstrated a 10-fold risk associated with wheezing without a cold.

Background/aim: The present study aimed at evaluating the contribution of IL-4 promoter T-1099G (rs2243248), C-589T (rs2243250), C-33T (rs2070874) genotypes to the risk of breast cancer in Taiwanese.
Materials And Methods: A total of 1232 breast cancer patients and 1232 age-matched controls were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methodology.
Results: Genotypic frequencies of IL-4 rs2243248, rs2243250 and rs2070874 were not differentially distributed between case and control groups.

Allergic rhinitis has complex patterns of inheritance, and single nucleotide polymorphisms, a common genetic variation in a population, exert a significant role in allergic rhinitis pathology. The current study aimed to investigate the association of polymorphisms with allergic rhinitis. Our study included 158 patients with allergic rhinitis and 140 healthy controls from Jordan that were genotyped for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) C-589T (rs2243250) and T-2979G (rs2227284) using restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction.

One hundred seventy eight patients with clinical symptoms of brucellosis were examined. According to the criteria for inclusion in a study of 178 patients, only 120 persons- (the main group) - fully met all criteria.

Aim: To evaluate the interaction effects of season of birth and immune system genes on the personality traits 'Novelty seeking' (NS) and 'Self-directedness' (SD). Based on results on an influence of the immune system on the brain processes, the authors hypothesized that the interaction of immune system genes and season of birth, which is relevant for immune phenotype, can contribute to the development of personality traits.
Material And Methods: NS and SD were measured in 336 healthy volunteers, aged from 16 to 67 years, using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-125).

There is growing evidence that serum levels of various inflammation markers are associated with personality traits. However, only few studies investigated the link between genetic variants of cytokine encoding genes and psychological characteristics. In this study, we examined genotypes in 297 individuals to assess the association between common variants of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) genes and basic personality traits of extraversion and neuroticism, measured using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ).
