The gas-phase decomposition pathways of diethylzinc (DEZn), a common precursor for deposition of Zn-VI compounds, were investigated in detail. The homogeneous thermal decomposition of DEZn in N2 carrier was followed in an impinging-jet, up-flow reactor by Raman scattering. Density Functional Theory calculations were performed to describe the bond dissociation behavior using the model chemistry B3LYP/6-311G(d) to estimate optimal geometries and Raman active vibrational frequencies of DEZn, as well as anticipated intermediates and products. Comparison of the measured DEZn decomposition profile to that predicted by a 2-D hydrodynamic simulation revealed that simple bond dissociation between zinc and carbon atoms is the dominant homogeneous thermal decomposition pathway. The calculations suggest several reactions involving intermediates and Raman scattering experiments confirming the formation of the dimer (ZnC2H5)2. In a different set of experiments, photolysis of DEZn gave evidence for decomposition by beta-hydride elimination. The results suggest that beta-hydride elimination is a minor pathway for the gas-phase homogeneous pyrolysis of diethylzinc. A reasonable transition state during beta-hydride elimination was identified, and the calculated energies and thermodynamic properties support the likelihood of these reaction steps.

Article Synopsis
  • A new method for C-H functionalization of heteroaryl compounds is introduced, which involves a process called dearomative addition followed by hydrogen autotransfer.
  • This process starts with the hydroruthenation of dienes to create allylruthenium nucleophiles, leading to branched C-C coupling products through addition and β-hydride elimination.
  • The study also details the formation of enantiomerically enriched heteroarylethyl alcohols and amines through oxidative cleavage and dynamic kinetic asymmetric reduction, supported by density functional theory calculations linking regioselectivities to molecular factors.

Using amines in catalytic transfer hydrogenation (TH) is challenging, despite their potential availability as a hydrogen source. Here, we describe a photoredox/nickel-catalyzed TH of alkyne through an intermediary aminoalkyl Ni species. This reaction successfully provided functionalized ()-alkenes, such as (homo)allyl ethers, alcohols, and amides (/ = up to >99:1), and the reaction thus bypasses a limitation of substrate scope in TH using amine and a Lindlar catalyst.

Ferrocenyl amines as directing groups for C-H activation have limitations as they are prone to undergo oxidation, allylic deamination, and β-hydride elimination. The fundamental challenge observed here is the competition between the desired C-H activation the vulnerable β-C-H bond activation of amines and fine-tuning of a suitable oxidant which avoids the oxidation of the β-C-H bond and ferrocene. Herein, the potential of an axially chiral NOBINAc ligand is revealed to implement the enantioselective Pd-catalyzed C-H activation process of ferrocenyl amines.

Palladium(ii)-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of aliphatic olefins would enable an efficient route to (conjugated) dienes, but remains scarcely investigated. Here, 2-hydroxypyridine (2-OH-pyridine) was found to be an effective ligand for Pd(ii) in the activation of vinylic C(sp)-H bonds. While reoxidation of Pd(0) is challenging in many catalytic oxidations, one can avoid in this reaction that the reoxidation becomes rate-limiting, even under ambient O pressure, by working in coordinating solvents.

The synthesis of coumarin- and flavonoid-chalcone hybrids via Pd-catalyzed Heck-type coupling of arene diazonium salts and 8-allylcoumarins and -flavonoids is reported. The β-hydride elimination step proceeds with high regioselectivity if an OMOM-substituent is present at the position C7, adjacent to the allyl group. A selective allylic oxidation of the coupling products was accomplished using DDQ in the presence of silica to furnish the chalcones.
