Two new maltol glycosides and cyanogenic glycosides from Elsholtzia rugulosa Hemsl.

Two new maltol glycosides, maltol 6'-O-beta-D-apiofuranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and maltol 6'-O-(5-O-p-coumaroyl)-beta-D-apiofuranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, were isolated from Elsholtzia rugulosa Hemsl. along with 11 known compounds including prunasin and amygdalin. The structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence. This is the second example of isolation of cyanogenic glycosides from Lamiaceous plants.

Intracellular protein complexes, known as inflammasomes, activate caspase-1 and induce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely interleukin (IL)-1β and -18. Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) is a known immunomodulator and a potential candidate for the regulation of inflammasomes. The saponins, such as ginsenosides, of RGE inhibit inflammasome signaling, while non-saponin substances containing amino sugars promote the priming step, up-regulating inflammasome components (pro-IL-1β, NLRP3, caspase-1, and Asc).

N6-methyladenosine (mA) RNA modification is a new epigenetic molecular mechanism involved in various biological or pathological processes. Exposure to aluminum (Al) has been considered to promote neuronal apoptosis resulting in cognitive dysfunction, yet whether mA modification participates in the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, rats exposed to aluminum-maltolate [Al(mal)] for 90 days showed impaired learning and memory function and elevated apoptosis, which were related to the increased mA level and decreased fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO, an mA demethylase) in the hippocampus.
