Terminal pores on crustacean setae are commonly associated with chemoreception. In this study we present an exception to that association with the description of glandular setae on maxillulary and maxillary endites of the remipede Speleonectes tanumekes. This introduces a function associated with crustacean setae beyond the general functions currently assigned to crustacean setae: sensory functions, mechanical functions, or a combination of these two. Even though the functions of the secretory products are unclear, we suggest means by which these may contribute to feeding behaviors. In addition, we describe glandular features of maxillary and maxillipedal distal claws of the same remipede species. Glandular setae and distal claws appear to share several morphological homologies.

Mouthparts are the feeding organs of insects, which play vital roles in the feeding process. The morphology of insect mouthparts has greatly evolved according to different foods and feeding habits. Therefore, studying the structure of the mouthparts is the key to understanding their feeding mechanisms.

Nymphs of (Drake) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) have numerous glandular setae on their dorsal abdomens. Chemical analysis of the exudates from these setae revealed the presence of 11 compounds, including aliphatic aldehydes, aliphatic ketones, and aromatic polyketides. Among them, 3-oxododecanal, 5-hydroxy-2-heptylchromanone, and 5-hydroxy-2-undecanylchromanone were identified for the first time in the family Tingidae.

The morphological diversity of insect mouthparts is closely related to changes in food sources and diets. Research into the structures of insect mouthparts may help to establish a fundamental basis for a better understanding of insect feeding mechanisms. In this study, we examined the fine morphology of the mouthparts of using scanning electron microscopy.

Some Pyrochroidae species are known as "canthariphilous" for their attraction to cantharidin (CTD), a toxic terpene with anti-predatory effects, produced in nature by only two beetle families (Meloidae and Oedemeridae). It has been demonstrated that males of Neopyrochroa flabellata ingesting CTD are positively selected by females. Indeed, the compound is re-emitted from a glandular cranial apparatus as secretions that are licked up by females during courtship behaviour, inducing copulation.

Article Synopsis
  • The male genitalia of Surazomus algodoal are described for the first time, introducing new terminology for the sclerites in the male genital chamber of schizomids.
  • Extensive microscopic investigations revealed setae and cuticular structures, and the female genitalia of S. algodoal are also described, highlighting sexual dimorphism.
  • The study proposes redefined terminology for microtrichia, cuticular sensilla, and setae in various body parts, aiming to enhance descriptions in future schizomid research.
