[Application of spiral CT 3D reconstruction of rib fracture in clinical forensic practice].

Fa Yi Xue Za Zhi

Institute of Forensic Science, Gongli Hospital, Pudong New District, Shanghai, China.

Published: December 2007

Objective: To assess the clinical application of spiral CT 3D reconstruction in forensic diagnosis of rib fracture.

Methods: Thirty-five cases of rib fractures were collectively studied by X-ray, regular CT scan, and adoptive 3D reconstruction with spiral CT.

Results: Clear and stereoscopic images of rib fractures without interference of the surrounding soft tissue were obtained in all of 35 cases examined.

Conclusion: Spiral CT 3D reconstruction could be a valuable means in forensic diagnosis of rib fracture.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha410011, China.

To explore the application of spiral tracheoplasty in the repair of large tracheal defects after the resection of trachea invaded by thyroid cancer. A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 11 patients, including 4 males and 7 females, aged from 36 to 67 years old, with large tracheal defects after tracheal resection due to thyroid papillary carcinoma invading the trachea in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University from January 2019 to January 2022. The range of tracheal defects, time of tracheal reconstruction, postoperative complications and airway were recorded, and the patients were followed up for more than 24 months.

Background: Recent studies have explored layered correction strategies, employing a slice-by-slice approach to mitigate the prominent limited-view artifacts present in reconstructed images from high-pitch helical CT scans. However, challenges persist in determining the angles, quantity, and sequencing of slices.

Objective: This study aims to explore the optimal slicing method for high pitch helical scanning 3D reconstruction.

Article Synopsis
  • Propagation-based imaging computed tomography (PBI-CT) is gaining popularity for visualizing low-density materials thanks to its high resolution and image contrast, but it poses radiation risks in live animal imaging due to high doses.
  • This study integrates a deep learning method called Sparse2Noise with PBI-CT to significantly reduce radiation exposure (up to 90%) while preserving image quality, showing improved results over traditional low-dose imaging methods.
  • The findings indicate that Sparse2Noise provides a better signal-to-noise ratio compared to two other advanced low-dose algorithms, enhancing the effectiveness of PBI-CT for biomedical applications.

Multispectral photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is an imaging modality that utilizes the photoacoustic effect to achieve non-invasive and high-contrast imaging of internal tissues but also molecular functional information derived from multi-spectral measurements. However, the hardware cost and computational demand of a multispectral PAT system consisting of up to thousands of detectors are huge. To address this challenge, we propose an ultra-sparse spiral sampling strategy for multispectral PAT, which we named U3S-PAT.

Biomechanics Laboratory, Singapore General Hospital, 20 College Road, Academia, Level 1, 169856, Singapore.

Introduction: Animal bones have been used as a model to mimic human bones for investigation of fracture patterns and fixation techniques. This study aims to investigate the effects of torsional forces of varying speeds on the spiral fracture in human metacarpal using a chicken humerus model.

Materials And Methods: Thirty fresh-frozen chicken humerus bones were dissected and equally divided into three groups.
