Biomass measurement is one of the most critical measurements in biotechnological processes. The technologies developed for the measurement of biomass in situ have developed over the years. Because it has been over 10 years since the last review concentrating on practical issues concerning biomass measurements, it is time to evaluate recent developments in the field. This review concentrates on the applications of dielectric spectroscopy, optical density, infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence for in situ measurement of biomass. The advantages offered by these methods and an economic way of estimating biomass concentration, the software sensors, are considered.

RNA modifications, such as N6-methylation of adenosine (m6A), serve as key regulators of cellular behaviors, and are highly dynamic; however, tools for dynamic monitoring of RNA modifications in live cells are lacking. Here, we develop a genetically encoded live-cell RNA methylation sensor that can dynamically monitor RNA m6A level at single-cell resolution. The sensor senses RNA m6A in cells via affinity-induced cytoplasmic retention using a nuclear location sequence-fused m6A reader.

Microbial communities, which are crucial for ecosystem function and sustainability, are under environmental pressure. Using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) as a measure of microbial biomass and community structure, the responses of microorganisms to environmental drivers were studied in bank soil and sediment alongside the Yangtze River in China. Rapid charge recombination, limited light response, and slow surface reactions were observed in the photocatalysts, thereby limiting their future-oriented applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production through water splitting. Automated, rapid electrocatalyst discovery techniques that comprehensively address the exploration of chemical spaces, characterization of catalyst robustness, reproducibility, and translation of results to (flow) electrolysis operation are needed. Responding to the growing interest in biomass valorization, we studied the glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GEOR) on gold in alkaline media as a model reaction to demonstrate the efficacy of such methodology introduced here. Our platform combines individually addressable electrode arrays with HardPotato, a Python application programming interface for potentiostat control, to automate electrochemical experiments and data analysis operations.
