Introduction: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an x linked recessive disorder. Long term prognosis is ominous, with development of respiratory distress and cardiomyopathy in advanced stage of the disease and expected death in the teens-to-mid 20s due to respiratory or cardiac failure. Peri-operative management of this patients is challenging due to difficult airway anatomy (macroglossia, limited neck and mandibular mobility).

A lot of complications are caused by inappropriate use of drugs and one potentially fatal complication is rhabdomyolysis. This is a case study of the care of a patient with rhabdomyolysis induced by glue sniffing, during the period between August 7 and August 18, 2003. Roy's nursing assessment was applied as an index to evaluate the patient.

A 34-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department with the development of quadriparesis and respiratory failure due to hypokalemia after prolonged glue sniffing. The patient was subsequently given mechanical ventilatory support for respiratory failure. He was weaned from the ventilator 4 days later after potassium replacement.
