To evaluate relationships between lipid-lowering therapy, inflammation, and 3-year mortality in critical limb ischemia (CLI), 259 consecutive CLI patients underwent evaluation of medication, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6 (IL-6), neopterin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), 8-epi-PGF(2 alpha), and endothelin-1. Mortality was assessed after 3 years. Sixty-one patients (24%) were on lipid-lowering therapy and 59 patients (97%) on statins. Patients on lipid-lowering therapy were younger and showed lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, hs-CRP, and IL-6 levels than patients without therapy. Three-year survival was higher among patients on lipid-lowering therapy. In logistic regression, the effect of lipid-lowering therapy on 3-year survival was significant with inflammatory markers entered into the model one by one but disappeared when all inflammatory markers were entered into the model together. In conclusion, hs-CRP and IL-6 levels were lower and 3-year survival was higher in CLI patients on lipid-lowering therapy.

Background: Patients with ischemic stroke (IS) or TIA face an elevated cardiovascular risk, warranting intensive lipid-lowering therapy. Despite recommendations, adherence to guidelines is suboptimal, leading to frequent undertreatment. This study aims to evaluate the statin use after IS and TIA.

Groundbreaking strategies for preventive cardiology were showcased at the 2024 American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) Congress on Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Prevention held in Salt Lake City, Utah, from August 2nd to 4th, 2024. The event featured 69 moderators and 13 scientific sessions comprised of 98 topics, 36 satellite events, 133 poster presentations, and 27 lifestyle classes. The conference highlighted innovative strategies focused on integrating cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health, presenting a cohesive approach for managing complex, interrelated conditions.

Pharmacological inhibition of Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin 9 (PCSK9) have been firmly established to be an effective approach to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and cardiovascular events. Subcutaneous administration of monoclonal antibodies (evolocumab and alirocumab) every 2 or 4 weeks determined a 60 % reduction of LDL cholesterol levels, while the GalNac-siRNA anti PCSK9 (inclisiran) provided an effective lipid lowering activity (-50 %) after an initial subcutaneous dose, repeated after 3 months and followed by a maintenance dose every 6 months. Although these two approaches have the potentiality to bring the majority of patients at high and very-high cardiovascular risk to the appropriate LDL cholesterol targets, their cost and subcutaneous administration represent a strong limitation for their large-scale use.

Background And Aims: Overweight and obesity are modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the general population, but their prevalence in individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) and whether they confer additional risk of ASCVD independent of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) remains unclear.
Methods: Cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 35 540 patients with HeFH across 50 countries, in the EAS FH Studies Collaboration registry. Prevalence of World Health Organization-defined body mass index categories was investigated in adults (n = 29 265) and children/adolescents (n = 6275); and their association with prevalent ASCVD.
