Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether genotypes of Streptococcus mutans strain can be detected as effectively in saliva samples as in plaque samples from buccal surfaces and occlusal surface fissures of permanent first molars.

Design: The study included 20 school children aged 6-7 years who were positive for mutans streptococci. Samples of stimulated saliva and of dental plaque on buccal surfaces and occlusal surface fissures of permanent first molars were collected. Samples were cultivated in MSB agar. Up to nine isolates compatible with mutans streptococci were obtained and identified by means of biochemical tests. All isolates identified as S. mutans were genotyped by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction.

Results: A total of 28 genotypes of S. mutans were isolated: 23 in saliva samples, 23 in buccal surface plaque samples, and 16 in plaque samples from occlusal surface fissures.

Conclusions: Although, saliva sampling did not reveal all genotypes isolated, it was equally as effective as plaque sampling from the buccal surfaces of permanent first molars, and more effective than plaque sampling from fissures on their occlusal surfaces.

The fibrosis-4 index and its association with carotid atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study in China.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center for Diabetes and Metabolism Research, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Background: The medical community has long been concerned about the cardiovascular disease risk in patients with type 2 diabetes. While liver fibrosis scores were originally designed for application in individuals with liver steatosis, an increasing number of studies have shown that they are also associated with cardiovascular disease risk. However, the association between Fibrosis-4 (Fib-4) in liver fibrosis scores and carotid atherosclerosis (CA) in patients with type 2 diabetes remains unclear.

The genus Streptococcus is highly diverse and a core member of the primate oral microbiome. Streptococcus species are grouped into at least eight phylogenetically-supported clades, five of which are found almost exclusively in the oral cavity. We explored the dominant Streptococcus phylogenetic clades in samples from multiple oral sites and from ancient and modern-day humans and non-human primates and found that clade dominance is conserved across human oral sites, with most Streptococcus reads assigned to species falling in the Sanguinis or Mitis clades.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is the principal pathological cause of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Chronic endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) has been implicated in AS aetiopathogenesis, but the underlying molecular interactions remain unclear. This study aims to identify the molecular mechanisms of ERS in AS pathogenesis to inform innovative diagnostic approaches and therapeutic targets for managing AS.

Background: Cutaneous tuberculosis is a rare form of the disease that defies diagnosis due to the diversity of clinical presentations. This study was based on the reality of a dermatology referral center in the Brazilian Amazon region to detail several characteristics of this disease.

Objective: To describe a series of cases of cutaneous tuberculosis treated at a dermatology service in the Brazilian Amazon region, addressing epidemiological aspects, clinical forms, diagnostic methods, treatment, and outcomes.

Background: Oral health may influence blood pressure control by modulating the abundance and activity of nitrate-reducing bacteria, which are essential for enhancing nitrite and nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. This study aimed to investigate the oral health and microbiome composition of women with pre-eclampsia (PET) compared to healthy controls (CN).

Methods: Ten PET and eleven CN women participated in this study, respectively.
