Objectives: This study sought to inform the development of an educational intervention for people with pre-diabetes in the UK by ascertaining individuals' experience of screening and diagnosis, their appraisal of the condition, and experience of health service delivery from diagnosis to 1 year post-diagnosis.
Methods: Qualitative interviews directed by framework methodology. Fifteen people diagnosed with pre-diabetes from the community (Midlands, UK) as part of a screening programme.
Results: Respondents consistently expressed the need for education and support at diagnosis. Dominating all respondents' narratives was the theme of 'uncertainty', which linked to two further themes of seriousness and taking action. These themes were influenced by respondents' prior experience and appraisal of both diabetes and pre-diabetes and their interpretation of health professionals' attitudes and actions towards them.
Conclusions: Patients identified as having pre-diabetes currently emphasise their uncertainties about their diagnosis, its physical consequences and subsequent management. Interventions to enable the increasing numbers of individuals with pre-diabetes to manage their health optimally should evolve to address these uncertainties.
Practice Implications: Those delivering services to those at risk of, or diagnosed with, pre-diabetes should be aware of patient needs and tailor care to support and shape perceptions to enhance health-maintaining behaviours.

In this study, we analyzed the potential associations of selected laboratory and anamnestic parameters, as well as 12 genetic polymorphisms (SNPs), with clinical COVID-19 occurrence and severity in 869 hospitalized patients. The SNPs analyzed by qPCR were selected based on population-wide genetic (GWAS) data previously indicating association with the severity of COVID-19, and additional SNPs that have been shown to be important in cellular processes were also examined. We confirmed the associations of COVID-19 with pre-existing diabetes and found an unexpected association between less severe disease and the loss of smell and taste.

Given research supporting up to 40% of AD cases as preventable with lifestyle modification, midlife represents a critical time of life to intervene on dementia risks; however, little research has examined women-specific presentation of risk at midlife, or how menopause staging may impact risk presentation. Background: Vascular-based dementia risk scores (VDRS) which reliably predict risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs), may be useful to identify at-risk individuals for secondary prevention trials. Dementia risk scores have typically focused on predicting ADRD-associated symptoms, with fewer studies assessing capacity for detecting individuals with underlying brain pathologies. We compare the predictive value of two vascular-based risk scores (CAIDE and Reitz VDRSs) for discriminating AD-related histopathological and structural abnormalities, further considering race and gender differences.

It has been hypothesized that the biopsychosocial stress associated with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, in combination with the immunological effects of SARS-CoV-2 and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, may contribute to the onset of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children. In this study, we documented the incidences of T1D in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, from 1986 to 2018, and expanded the analysis to include cases from 2019 to 2022 to evaluate the potential influence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on T1D incidence. The COVID-19 pandemic period was defined as 2020 to 2022.
