Methods for accurately measuring depolarization and principal Mueller matrix by null ellipsometry are devised. The measurement errors obtained with these methods are analyzed, and methods to correct for the errors are devised. The depolarization spectrum measured directly by null ellipsometry for a sapphire slab agrees excellently with the depolarization spectrum reduced indirectly from the retardance spectrum measured by rotating analyzer ellipsometry and the depolarization spectrum simulated for the retardance spread caused by a finite bandwidth of monochromator [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 17, 2067 (2001)]. The measured cross-polarized depolarization for the sapphire slab is much smaller than the total depolarization.

Methods of quantifying the electrostatics of charged interfaces are important in a range of research areas. The surface-selective nonlinear optical technique second harmonic generation (SHG) is a sensitive probe of interfacial electrostatics. Recent work has shown that detection of the SHG phase in addition to its amplitude enables direct quantification of the interfacial potential.

The formation of dense protein interfacial layers at a free air-water interface is known to result from both diffusion and advection. Furthermore, protein interactions in concentrated phases are strongly dependent on their overall positive or negative net charge, which is controlled by the solution pH. As a consequence, an interesting question is whether the presence of an advection flow of water toward the interface during protein adsorption produces different kinetics and interfacial structure of the adsorbed layer, depending on the net charge of the involved proteins and, possibly, on the sign of this charge.

An efficient procedure for chemical initiator-free, synthesis of a functional polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEG MA) hydrogel on regular glass substrates is reported. It is demonstrated that self-initiated photografting and photopolymerization driven by UV irradiation can yield tens of nanometer-thick coatings of carboxy-functionalized PEG MA on the aldehyde-terminated borosilicate glass surface. The most efficient formulation for hydrogel synthesis contained methyl methacrylic acid (MAA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and PEG methacrylate (PEGMA) monomers (1:1:1).

This study sets out to investigate the effect of the presence of small water-soluble additives on the tunability of the surfactant gel-to-liquid crystalline (L-L) phase transition temperature ( ) for a bilayer-forming cationic surfactant and the phase behavior of such surfactant systems on dilution. This is strongly driven by the fact that this type of cationic surfactant has many interesting unanswered scientific questions and has found applications in various areas such as consumer care, the petrochemical industry, food science, The underlying surfactant/additive interactions and the interfacial behavior of lamellar surfactant systems including the surfactant deposition on surfaces can provide new avenues to develop novel product formulations. We have examined dioctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DODAC) in the presence of small polar additives, with respect to the phase behavior upon dilution and the deposition on silica.
