Many studies have focused on the effect of fresh fruits on the risk of developing cancer and other diseases involved with reactive species and free radicals. The intake of frozen fruits has spread widely in the last years, but, until now, their biological activity is not completely known. In this study, 23 samples of frozen fruits were analyzed for their nutritional composition, total polyphenols, total carotenoids, and vitamin C content. Antioxidant, mutagenic, and antimutagenic effects were also evaluated. Antioxidant assays included 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH(.)) scavenging activity and determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD)- and catalase (CAT)-like activities. Mutagenic and antimutagenic evaluations were performed in eukaryotic cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. Most samples (74%) showed antioxidant activity similar to vitamin C in the DPPH(.) assay, and this activity was positively correlated (r = 0.366; P

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, the bulk of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication is mediated by the replicative high-fidelity DNA polymerase γ. However, upon UV irradiation low-fidelity translesion polymerases: Polη, Polζ and Rev1, participate in an error-free replicative bypass of UV-induced lesions in mtDNA. We analysed how translesion polymerases could function in mitochondria.

Cultured milk products including yogurt, buttermilk, and lassi have made their way into South Asian cuisine for hundreds of years and are extraordinarily beneficial to human health. With a study background on lactic acid bacteria (LAB), these products are scientifically proved to aid in strengthening the immune system, for their anti-mutagenic effects, suitability for those who are lactose intolerant, and for protection against cancer, osteoporosis, and gut disorders. As of now, no scientific attention has been given to the microbial diversity of cultured milk products despite its prominent production and importance in the culture.

The biological effects of marolo (Annona crassiflora Mart.) seed byproducts, a native fruit of Brazilian Cerrado, have not been extensively studied. We evaluated the chemopreventive potential of marolo seed almond flour (MSAF) and marolo seed film flour (MSFF) and correlated the results obtained with the antioxidant capacity presented by the seed.

Flavonoids are a class of polyphenolic secondary metabolites found in plants. Due to their ubiquity in our daily dietary intake and their major anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic activities, they have been a major focus of wide-ranging research for the past two decades. Mass spectrometry combined with liquid chromatography is one of the most popular techniques for the analysis of flavonoids.

Phenolic phytometabolites are promising bioactive compounds for management of genomic instability related diseases. Formononetin (FMN) and arbutin (ARB) are found in several plant sources. Our goal was to investigate the safety and efficacy of FMN and ARB using both standardized and alternative toxicogenetic methods.
