Infection of primary cultures of total splenic and thymic cells from BALB/c and C3H/HeN mice with CVB4 E2 and JVB strains has been investigated. The presence of positive-strand viral RNA within cells was determined by semi-nested RT-PCR, and viral replication was attested by detection of intracellular negative-strand viral RNA and by release of infectious particles in culture supernatants. Viral replication occurred with both CVB4 strains to an extent dependent on the genetic background of the host. No interferon-alpha production was detected in the supernatants of CVB4-infected cultures using biological titration. Together these results suggest that infection of splenic and thymic cells can play a role in virus dissemination, and therefore in the pathophysiology of CVB4 infections.

Dendritic cells (DCs), the primary antigen-presenting cells, have traditionally been identified by CD103 molecules in rats, whereas mouse and human DCs are identified by CD11c molecules. However, this history does not preclude the existence of CD103 DCs in rats. To explore this possibility, we examined MHCII cells in rat spleen and thymus, identifying a novel population of CD103MHCIICD45RCD172a cells.

Knowledge on the structure and composition of the haematopoietic tissue (HT) is essential to understand the basic immune functions of the immune system in any species. For reptiles, it is extremely limited, hence we undertook an in-depth in situ investigation of the HT (bone marrow, thymus, spleen, lymphatic tissue of the alimentary tract) in the common boa (Boa constrictor). We also assessed age- and disease-related changes, with a special focus on Boid Inclusion Body Disease, a highly relevant reptarenavirus-associated disease in boid snakes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) induced by atherosclerosis (AS) is the main fatal complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Establishing an appropriate animal model of SLE with AS is of great value for investigating the pathogenesis and therapeutic targets of SLE-CVD. In the present work, pristane was injected intraperitoneally into C57BL/6J mice to establish the SLE model and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccine (BCG) was injected intradermally one month later to enhance immunity and induce AS.
