Superlubricity between incommensurate surfaces provides a desired low-friction state essential for the function of small-scale machines. Here we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that superlubricity in contacts lubricated by lamellar solids might be eliminated due to torque-induced reorientation coupled to lateral motion. We find that the possibility of reorientation always leads to stabilization of a high frictional state which corresponds to a commensurate configuration.

We report deterministic operations on single dipolar skyrmions confined in nanostructured cuboids by using in-plane currents. We achieve highly reversible writing and deleting of skyrmions in a simple cuboid without any artificial defects or pinning sites. The current-induced creation of skyrmions is well-understood through the spin-transfer torque acting on surface spin twists of the spontaneous 3D ferromagnetic state, caused by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction of the uniaxial FeSn magnet with a low-quality factor.

Uterine torsion represents a rare condition that may occur during pregnancy or in non-gravid women. This condition is difficult to diagnose, since there are no specific signs besides abdominal pain. Thus, most of the cases are not diagnosed correctly before a surgical procedure and may result in complications and poor outcomes.

Objective: The analgesic effect of acupuncture has been widely accepted. Nevertheless, the mechanism behind its analgesic effect remains elusive, thus impeding the progress of research geared toward enhancing the analgesic effect of acupuncture. This paper investigated the role of acupuncture needle surface textures on acupuncture's analgesic effect by creating four experimental acupuncture needles with different patterns of surface augmentation.

Circular DNA found in the cell is actively regulated to an underwound state, with their superhelical density close to . While this underwound state is essential to life, how it impacts the torsional mechanical properties of DNA is not fully understood. In this work, we performed simulations to understand the torsional mechanics of circular DNA and validated our results with single-molecule measurements and analytical theory.

During DNA replication, the replisome must rotate relative to the DNA substrate, generating supercoiling that must be partitioned in front of or behind the replisome. Supercoiling partitioned behind the replisome may intertwine (or braid) daughter DNA molecules and restrict chromosome segregation. Supercoiling partitioning and torsional resistance at the replisome should depend on the geometry of the two daughter DNA molecules, determined by their end separations.
