Aim: To identify the role of herbal compound 861 (Cpd 861) in the regulation of mRNA expression of collagen synthesis- and degradation-related genes in human hepatic stellate cells (HSCs).

Methods: mRNA levels of collagen types I and III, matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), and transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) in cultured-activated HSCs treated with Cpd 861 or interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) were determined by real-time PCR.

Results: Both Cpd 861 and IFN-gamma reduced the mRNA levels of collagen type III, MMP-2 and TGF-beta1. Moreover, Cpd 861 significantly enhanced the MMP-1 mRNA levels while down-regulated the TIMP-1 mRNA expression, increasing the ratio of MMP-1 to TIMP-1 to (6.3 + 0.3)- fold compared to the control group.

Conclusion: The anti-fibrosis function of Cpd 861 may be mediated by both decreased interstitial collagen sythesis by inhibiting the transcription of collagen type III and TGF-beta1 and increased degradation of these collagens by up-regulating MMP-1 and down-regulating TIMP-1 mRNA levels.

Central-peripheral dichotomy: color-motion and luminance-motion binding show stronger top-down feedback in central vision.

Recently a theory (Zhaoping, Vision Research, 136, 32-49, 2017) proposed that top-down feedback from higher to lower visual cortical areas, to aid visual recognition, is stronger in the central than in the peripheral visual fields. Since top-down feedback helps feature binding, a critical visual recognition process, this theory predicts that insufficient feedback in the periphery should make feature misbinding more likely. To test this prediction, this study assessed binding between color and motion features, or between luminance and motion features, at different visual field eccentricities.

The aim of this case study was to quantify the magnitude of internal load, acute/chronic workload ratio (ACWR), well-being perception, and heart rate variability (HRV) following 38 weeks of functional-fitness training in a female elite athlete. The internal load was obtained with session rating perceived exertion (session-RPE) while the ACWR was calculated by dividing the acute workload by the chronic workload (four-week average). Furthermore, HRV measurements were analyzed via a commercially available smartphone (HRV4training) each morning upon waking whilst in a supine position.

Herbal compound 861 (Cpd 861) exerts an anti-fibrotic effect in patients with hepatic fibrosis; however, the anti-fibrotic mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to explore the mechanistic basis for the anti-fibrotic effect, with a focus on bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7)/Smad signaling in a bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced liver fibrosis rat model. Following the induction of hepatic fibrosis, rats induced by BDL were treated with 9 g/kg Cpd 861 daily or an equal volume of saline for 28 days.
