Background/aim: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in China. Accurate diagnosis of stroke type requires advanced imaging techniques. However, CT scan and MRI were not widely used in China until the middle 1990s. We estimate the stroke incidence based on stroke hospitalizations in Shunde District, Foshan, south China.
Methods: Stroke hospitalization rates were calculated for different age strata using the number of cases observed and the population size of Shunde in 2005 and 2006.
Results: The age-adjusted hospitalization rates (per 100,000 person-years) for all strokes were 57.4 overall, 65.1 for males and 50.0 for females, standardized according to Segi's world population.
Conclusion: The stroke incidence appeared to be lower in Shunde than those reported for other parts of China.

Aims: Neuron death is caused primarily by apoptosis after spinal cord injury (SCI). Autophagy, as a cellular response, can maintain cellular homeostasis to reduce apoptosis. We aimed to investigate the effect and the mechanism of vimentin knockdown on autophagy and neural recovery after SCI.

Background And Aim: The relationship between the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and carotid atherosclerosis has not yet been assessed in a longitudinal investigation. Our current study aimed to investigate whether SIRI is related to an increased risk of incident carotid plaque.
Methods And Results: Our study included individuals who did not have carotid atherosclerosis and had undergone yearly health check-ups at the Department of Health Management of Nanfang Hospital between 2011 and 2018 (total n = 3927).

Objective: To investigate the mechanism by which heterogeneity in breast cancer developed and acted in single-cell transcriptomes.
Methods: The composition of breast cancer based on the single-cell transcriptomes of 54,055 high-quality cells from clinical specimens of 4 malignant and 4 non-malignant patients were investigated.
Results: We identified six common expression programs and six subtype-specific expression programs form malignant epithelial cells.

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been proven to prevent decline in kidney function and failure. Whether SGLT2i affect the risk of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) remains uncertain.
Methods: Use of SGLT2i was assessed in consecutive diabetics undergoing coronary angiography (CA) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from January 2020 to May 2023 at a tertiary hospital in Chongqing, China.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) has become the pre-dominant arrhythmia worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Its pathogenesis is intricately linked to the deleterious impact of cardiovascular risk factors, emphasizing the pivotal imperative for early detection and mitigation strategies targeting these factors for the prevention of primary AF. While traditional risk factors are well recognized, an increasing number of novel risk factors have been identified in recent decades.
