Alexithymia and outcome in psychotherapy. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: About 25% of all patients seeking psychotherapeutic treatment are considered to be alexithymic. Alexithymia has been assumed to be negatively associated with therapeutic outcome. On the other hand, it is unclear to which extent alexithymia itself may be modified by psychotherapeutic interventions.

Methods: From 414 consecutively admitted inpatients, 297 were followed up after 4 weeks (t1) and after 8-12 weeks (t2) upon discharge. Patients were treated with psychodynamic group therapy in a naturalistic setting. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Symptom Checklist-90 were administered.

Results: Twenty-seven percent of the patients were alexithymic (TAS-20 >/=61) at baseline. Multivariate models with repeated measurements indicated significant changes in Global Severity Index of the Symptom Checklist-90 in both alexithymic and nonalexithymic subjects. However, alexithymic subjects had significantly higher Global Severity Index scores than nonalexithymic subjects at t0, t1 and t2 (p < 0.001). The TAS-20 scores demonstrated a high relative stability in the total sample. However, in the alexithymic group, the TAS-20 scores changed considerably from baseline to discharge [66.3 (SD = 4.7) to 55.9 (SD = 9.9); t = 8.69; d.f. = 79; p < 0.001].

Conclusion: The inpatient treatment program including psychodynamic group therapy significantly reduced psychopathological distress and alexithymic features in alexithymic patients. Still, these patients suffered from higher psychopathological distress at discharge than nonalexithymics. Therefore, alexithymic features may negatively affect the long-term outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how pregnancy-related factors, emotional awareness (alexithymia), and depression impact dream experiences in women during their first trimester, suggesting that dreaming helps with emotional regulation during this sensitive period.
  • - 118 pregnant women participated in various questionnaires measuring their dream characteristics, emotional awareness, and depression, revealing that older age, prior pregnancies, and depressive symptoms influenced dream recall and nightmares.
  • - Findings indicate that higher alexithymia and depressive symptoms are linked to more frequent and distressing nightmares, suggesting a need for targeted support to improve emotional coping strategies in pregnant women; future studies should look into the content of these nightmares for better understanding.

EXPRESS: Alexithymia does not explain facial expression recognition difficulties across the dark triad spectrum.

Q J Exp Psychol (Hove)

December 2024

School of Psychology, Faculty of Medicine, Health, and Life Sciences, Swansea University, Swansea, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated whether trait alexithymia could uniquely predict abilities in facial expression discrimination and labeling, beyond the influence of dark triad traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) in a sample of 236 individuals.
  • Findings revealed that while both autistic traits and dark triad traits were correlated with facial expression recognition abilities, alexithymic traits did not add any unique predictive value.
  • The results suggest that dark triad and autistic traits, along with general cognitive ability, play essential roles in facial expression recognition, while alexithymia does not contribute additional unique variance.

Although research indicates that self-reported interoception is associated with deficits in identifying and describing emotional experience, and externally oriented thinking styles (alexithymia), this relationship appears moderated by how interoception is measured. A systematic review and meta-analyses examined the association between self-reported interoception and alexithymia, investigating how different interoceptive questionnaires relate to alexithymia at global and facet levels. PsychINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched with predefined terms related to self-reported interoception and alexithymia.

Maternal alexithymia and caregiving behavior: the role of executive functioning - A FinnBrain Birth Cohort study.

Arch Womens Ment Health

November 2024

Department of Clinical Medicine, The FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study, Turku Brain and Mind Center, University of Turku, Turku, Finland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how parental cognitive abilities (executive functioning) and emotional processing difficulties (alexithymic traits) affect the emotional quality of parent-child relationships (emotional availability).
  • Researchers measured these factors in 119 mothers with young children, finding that higher alexithymic traits were linked to poorer caregiving abilities.
  • The results suggest that parents with lower cognitive executive functioning may struggle more with emotional availability, indicating the need for further research into the interaction between these traits.

Objectives: Disrupted emotion processes are commonly linked to the onset and maintenance of auditory verbal hallucinations. However, a comprehensive approach using an extended emotion model has not previously been applied to voice-hearers to distinguish impairments in emotion processes from non-clinical populations. The present study hypothesised voice-hearers, as compared to controls, would have (1) higher reactivity to negative emotions and lower reactivity to positive emotions, (2) more difficulties regulating negative and positive emotions, (3) more maladaptive strategy use, and (4) higher alexithymia.
