A simple and rapid spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of Pu in highly radioactive liquid waste. This method uses Nd(III) as an internal standard, which enables us to determine the concentration of Pu and to authenticate the whole analytical scheme as well. A Nd(III) standard mixed with a sample solution and Pu was quantitatively oxidized to Pu(VI) with Ce(IV) in a nitric acid medium, having the maximum absorbance at 830 nm. A spectrophotometric measurement of Pu(VI) was subsequently performed to determine the concentration compared with the maximum absorbance of Nd(III) at 795 nm. It was estimated that the relative expanded uncertainty for a real sample is less than 10%. The limit of detection was calculated to be 1.8 mg/L (3 sigma). The proposed method was also validated through comparison experiments with isotope dilution mass spectrometry, and was successfully applied to analysis for nuclear waste management at spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plants.

In this study, the long-term transfer of Cs from soil to grass on Swedish farms and fields, heavily contaminated after the 1986 radioactive fallout, was investigated. The study spans over 8-14 years, beginning in June 1986, and covers various soil types and agricultural practices. The transfer of Cs from soil to grass was highly variable, with transfer factors ranging from 1.

Composite adsorbents based on a natural biopolymer matrix of chitosan, to which 4-amino-N'-hydroxy-1,2,5-oxadiazole-3-carboximidamide and its Se derivative were attached, were synthesized. A complex of physicochemical analysis methods indicates that the direct introduction of a matrix with high ionic permeability into the reaction mixture contributes to the formation of homogeneous particles of composite with developed surface morphology, which enhances the kinetic and capacitive parameters of uranium sorption in liquid media. It has been established that the direct introduction of a matrix with high ionic permeability into the reaction mixture contributes to the formation of homogeneous particles with a developed surface morphology, which enhances the kinetic and capacitive parameters of uranium sorption in liquid media.

Efficient capture of TcO/ReO via node and linker bifunctional anion exchange covalent organic frameworks.

In nuclear wastewater treatment, ion-scavenging materials designed to trap TcO is urgently needed. However, strong acid/base, high radiation and high salt concentration of nuclear wastewater usually result in inadequate stability and adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. Herein, we report a new class of bifunctional anion-exchange olefin-linked COF (BPDC-MTMP) prepared via Knoevenagel condensation reactions, the first example exploring the synergistic integration of positively charged fragments at both nodes and linkers.

Unveiling the role of saltmarshes as coastal potassium sinks: A perspective from porewater-derived potassium exchange.

Sci Total Environ

Key Laboratory of Coastal Environment and Resources of Zhejiang Province, School of Engineering, Westlake University, Hangzhou 310024, China. Electronic address:

Saltmarshes serve as repositories for various metal species, primarily due to vegetation removal and mineralization processes. However, the significance of potassium (K), one of the three major nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and K) essential for plant growth, has often been overlooked, particularly in the context of saltmarshes where the mechanisms of K transport via porewater exchange remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted field observations and laboratory analysis, and developed a Rn mass balance model to quantify K fluxes via porewater exchange under physical, biological, and anthropogenic drivers.
