Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and treatment of the ciliary epithelium tear combined with retina detachment of the eye, and consequently, to reduce mistaken and missed diagnosis and to improve the cure rate.

Methods: The clinical data, treatment, and follow up results of 17 eyes from 16 cases of ciliary epithelium tear combined with retina detachment were analyzed retrospectively.

Results: All of the patients had a history of eye trauma. All eyes showed ciliary epithelium tear combined with retina detachment by the fundus examination. All eyes were treated with sclera buckling and cryotherapy. Subretinal fluid draining was applied in 13 eyes and combined pneumatic retinopexy was performed in 4 eyes. The detached retina was reattached in all eyes and visual acuity was improved during the follow up period.

Conclusions: Ciliary epithelium tear combined with retina detachment always appears after eye injury. The super nasal quadrant is the most frequently affected region. The use of ultrasound biomicroscopy, gonioscopy and binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy combined with sclera pressure technique helps to obtain a correct diagnosis. Sclera buckling surgery results in a high success rate.
