Published: March 2008

Hindfoot salvage procedures by definition present circumstances requiring extraordinary measures to prevent or limit damage or destruction. Although this technique is used at some centers as the only means of correcting and fixating foot and ankle deformities, it is an expensive procedure. Other available methods may be more expeditious depending on the circumstances. However, the benefits of external fixation in certain circumstances are invaluable. Circular frame external fixators are important tool for the foot and ankle surgeon.

The hindfoot is an uncommon site for malignant tumours. While limb salvage procedures are now more common for treating bone sarcoma, there is limited information available on hindfoot reconstruction alternatives because of its low incidence and its challenging outcomes. We present a case report of a man in his late 60s with synovial sarcoma affecting the right heel (calcaneus and soft tissue).

Efficacy and safety of carbon fiber retrograde intramedullary nailing in tibio-talar-calcaneal fusion: a single-centre retrospective study.

Article Synopsis
  • TTC fusion is a surgical procedure for severe hindfoot issues, and this study compares traditional methods to carbon fiber retrograde intramedullary nailing (CF RIMN) regarding effectiveness and safety.
  • A retrospective study of 21 patients showed a 90% union rate, with complications like iatrogenic fractures and postoperative issues noted at 14% and 19%, respectively, while patient-reported satisfaction improved based on VAS scores.
  • The results suggest that while CF RIMN is effective, its complications require careful consideration, and more extensive studies are needed for validation and understanding long-term results.

Purpose: We aimed to report the union rate after only utilizing a locally obtained autologous bone graft while correcting the deformity and performing joint arthrodesis in patients with foot and ankle Charcot neuropathy (CN) and to report on the radiographic, functional, complications incidence outcomes at a minimum of two years of follow up.

Methods: We included 24 patients having a mean age of 55.4 ± 10.

Functional Ankle Reconstruction Technique After Total Calcanectomy.

J Am Podiatr Med Assoc

July 2024

†Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Istanbul University, Istanbul School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Although comminuted fractures, osteomyelitis, large skin ulcers, and malignant tumors are rarely seen in the calcaneus, it is a problematic region to treat because it is not an actual compartment and has insufficient blood supply. Few foot and ankle surgeons would recommend total calcanectomy in various cases of malignant tumors, comminuted fractures, ulcerations of the heel often seen in diabetic patients, and chronic osteomyelitis. After calcanectomy, if functional reconstruction is not performed, the patient will experience loss of function, pain, wound problems, talonavicular dislocations, and additional surgical interventions.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the use of pedicled local (PFs) versus random pattern flaps (RpFs) in foot and ankle reconstruction in patients with chronic, nonhealing wounds.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective review of 204 patients with 118 PFs and 86 RpFs was performed. The primary outcome included rates of limb salvage.
