Introduction: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators improve mortality in selected high risk patients, yet population based data regarding utilization of these devices, particularly in the elderly, are limited.

Methods: To address this, we reviewed all ICD implantations performed in Olmsted County, MN, a geographically defined population, between December 1989 and December 2004.

Results: The study population comprised 179 patients (147 male, 82%, mean age 65 +/- 14 years). Baseline ejection fraction and creatinine were 35% +/- 16% and 1.38 +/- 1.08 mg/dl, respectively. Over the study period, the incidence of congestive heart failure in patients undergoing ICD implantation and referrals for primary prevention ICDs increased, while baseline ejection fraction and etiology of cardiomyopathy remained unchanged. The incidence of ICD implantations increased significantly in the elderly (p < 0.001) and especially in male patients when compared to female patients (p < 0.001).

Conclusions: Age of patients undergoing ICD implantation is increasing. However, fewer females compared to males are undergoing ICD implantation, suggesting a gender bias in ICD therapy and utilization.

Background: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is typically diagnosed following an arrhythmic event or during screening after a family member experiences sudden cardiac death. Implantation of a defibrillator (ICD) improves survival but can be associated with morbidity and risks, an important consideration within a shared decision-making context. This study examined patient decisional needs and preferences surrounding ARVC screening and prophylactic ICD implantation.

Background: Many patients require total knee arthroplasty (TKA) bilaterally; however, there is limited data on bilateral procedures. This study aims to compare medical and surgical complications and hospital-related outcomes between simultaneous and staged bilateral TKA. We hypothesize that staged procedures will have superior outcomes.

Background: The evidence in the primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) by using implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) is well-established but remains controversial for those with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM). This study evaluates whether prognostic differences exist between ICM and NICM patients after ICD implantation.

Methods: Patients initially undergoing ICD implantation as primary SCD prevention were retrospectively enrolled from January 2017 to May 2023.

Background And Aims: Malignant gastric outlet obstruction (MGOO) is an unfortunate complication of advanced upper gastrointestinal malignancies. Historically, surgical gastrojejunostomy has been the procedure of choice to achieve enteral bypass. Recently, endoscopic techniques have gained popularity in the management of MGOO.

Outcomes in Catheter Ablation of Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia in Myocarditis Compared with Ischemic Heart Disease.

Rev Cardiovasc Med

January 2025

Arrhythmia Center, Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, 100037 Beijing, China.

Background: The substrates for arrhythmias in myocarditis and ischemic heart disease (IHD) are different, but it is yet to be determined whether there is a difference in outcomes following catheter ablation (CA) for ventricular tachycardia (VT) associated with these two conditions. This study aimed to compare outcomes after CA of VT in patients with myocarditis versus those with IHD.

Methods: Patients undergoing CA for sustained VT confirmed by endomyocardial biopsy as myocarditis, and patients with IHD experiencing sustained VT undergoing CA were retrospectively enrolled from February 2017 to March 2023.
