Excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMS) was used to characterize the ultra violet fluorescence fingerprints of eight crude oils (with a 14,470-fold range of dynamic viscosity) in seawater. When the chemical dispersant Corexit 9500 was mixed with the oils prior to their dispersion in seawater, the fingerprints of each oil changed primarily as an increase in fluorescence over an emission band centered on 445 nm. In order to simplify the wealth of information available in the excitation-emission matrix spectra (EEMs), two ratios were calculated. A 66-90% decrease in the slope ratio was observed with the addition of Corexit. When the slope ratios were reduced in complexity to intensity ratios, similar trends were apparent. As a result either of the ratios could be used as a simple and rapid means of identifying and monitoring chemically dispersed oil in the open ocean.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents one of the most active elements in aquatic systems, whose fraction is engaged in chemical and biological reactions. However, fluorescence, molecular diversity and variations of DOM in groundwater systems with the alteration of surface water recharge remain unclear. Herein, Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) combined with principal component coefficients, parallel factor analyses (PARAFAC) with two‒dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) were applied in this study.

Tire tread particles are microplastics (< 5 mm) and leach organic chemicals into aquatic environments. It is important to understand the behavior of tire wear compounds in sunlight-exposed waters in terms of their persistence, removal, and transformation. Therefore, we conducted photolysis experiments with leachates from laboratory-generated tire tread particles (TTP) over 72 h in a solar simulator to evaluate the behavior of leached compounds and fluorescent components over time.

The biogeochemical processes of organic matter exhibit notable variability and unpredictability in marginal seas. In this study, the abiologically and biologically driving effects on particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea of China, by introducing the cutting-edge network inference tool of deep learning. The concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC) was determined to characterize the status of POM, and the fractions and fluorescent properties of DOM were identified through 3D excitation-emission-matrix spectra (3D-EEM) combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC).

Significant efforts were currently being made worldwide to develop a tool capable of distinguishing between various harmful viruses through simple analysis. In this study, we utilized fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy as a rapid and specific tool with high sensitivity, employing a straightforward methodological approach to identify spectral differences between samples of respiratory infection viruses. To achieve this goal, the fluorescence EEM spectral data from eight virus samples was divided into training and test sets, which were then analyzed using random forest and support vector machine classification models.

Accurate and selective monitoring of thiamine levels in multivitamin supplements is essential for preventing deficiencies and ensuring product quality. To achieve this, a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) system using carbon dots (CDs) as energy donors and citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as energy acceptors was developed. The aqueous synthesis of AgNPs using microwave irradiation was optimized to obtain efficient plasmonic nanoparticles for FRET applications, targeting maximal absorbance intensity, stability, and wavelength alignment.
