Whether the potential costs associated with broad-scale use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) outweigh possible benefits is highly contentious, including within the scientific community. Even among those generally in favour of commercialization of GM crops, there is nonetheless broad recognition that transgene escape into the wild should be minimized. But is it possible to achieve containment of engineered genetic elements in the context of large scale agricultural production? In a previous study, Warwick et al. (2003) documented transgene escape via gene flow from herbicide resistant (HR) canola (Brassica napus) into neighbouring weedy B. rapa populations (Fig. 1) in two agricultural fields in Quebec, Canada. In a follow-up study in this issue of Molecular Ecology, Warwick et al. (2008) show that the transgene has persisted and spread within the weedy population in the absence of selection for herbicide resistance. Certainly a trait like herbicide resistance is expected to spread when selected through the use of the herbicide, despite potentially negative epistatic effects on fitness. However, Warwick et al.'s findings suggest that direct selection favouring the transgene is not required for its persistence. So is there any hope of preventing transgene escape into the wild?

Unlabelled: The T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire of intestinal CD4+ T cells is enriched for specificity towards microbiome-encoded epitopes shared among many microbiome members, providing broad microbial reactivity from a limited pool of cells. These cells actively coordinate mutualistic host-microbiome interactions, yet many epitopes are shared between gut symbionts and closely related pathobionts and pathogens. Given the disparate impacts of these agents on host health, intestinal CD4+ T cells must maintain strain-level discriminatory power to ensure protective immunity while preventing inappropriate responses against symbionts.

Advancements in mRNA delivery nanoparticles have significantly improved the potential for treating challenging diseases. Due to the inherent immunogenicity and rapid degradation of mRNA, specialized nanoparticles are required for efficient intracellular uptake, endosomal escape, and protection from lysosomal degradation. Although current methods enable transgene expression but achieving a balance between efficiency and toxicity remains challenging.

Xanthomonas fragariae (Xaf) is the cause of strawberry crown dry cavity rot and strawberry leaf angular spots. Despite having a long evolutionary history with strawberries, the plant-pathogen interaction is poorly understood. Pathogenicity for most plant pathogens is mostly dependent on the type-III secretion system, which introduces virulence type III effectors (T3Es) into eukaryotic host cells.

Larvae of the black soldier fly Hermetia illucens have potential as a natural waste recycler and subsequent use as protein-rich feed for livestock. A common question about the insect-farming processes is, what about the concerns of mass escape of insects from large populations? Here, we present a binary transgenic CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate wingless strain with the potential to address this issue. We identified gonad-specific promoters in vivo and evaluated use of the two strongest promoters, nanos and exuperantia, to drive Cas9 expression.

Objective: To examine the effects of long-term aerobic exercise on oxidative stress and learning memory ability of APP/PS1 mice, focusing on the hippocampal Keap1, Nrf2, HO-1, and GPX4 proteins.
Methods: Thirty APP/PS1 double transgenic AD mice were randomly divided into three groups: model group, short-term exercise group, and long-term exercise group, with 10 mice in each group. Male non-transgenic mice of the same age served as the control group.
