Complex systems, such as in brains, markets, and societies, exhibit internal dynamics influenced by external factors. Disentangling delayed external effects from internal dynamics within these systems is often difficult. We propose using a Vector Autoregressive model with eXogenous input (VARX) to capture delayed interactions between internal and external variables.

We introduce a novel technique for enhancing the robustness of light-pulse atom interferometers against the pulse infidelities that typically limit their sensitivities. The technique uses quantum optimal control to favorably harness the multipath interference of the stray trajectories produced by imperfect atom-optics operations. We apply this method to a resonant atom interferometer and achieve thousandfold phase amplification, representing a 50-fold improvement over the performance observed without optimized control.

A number of recent studies have applied 2DTS either with long pulses or away from any material resonances, situations that yield unconventional 2DTS spectra that are often difficult to interpret. Here, we clarify the generic origins of observed spectral features by examining 2DTS spectra of ZnTe, a model system with a featureless optical susceptibility at low terahertz frequencies.

The freezing/melting transition is at the heart of many natural and industrial processes. In the classical picture, the transition proceeds via the nucleation of the new phase, which has to overcome a barrier associated with the free energy cost of the growing nucleus. The total nucleation rate is also influenced by a kinetic factor, which somehow depends on the number of attempts to create a nucleus, that translates into a significant density of proto-nuclei in the system.

Isolated systolic hypertension is typical for the elderly, but also occurs in younger adults. Increased pulse wave amplification between the elastic aorta and arteries to the arm can result in a higher peripheral (brachial) blood pressure, while central (aortic) systolic blood pressure is normal. A 21-year-old athletic man was referred because of an arterial blood pressure of 160/85 mmHg.
