The effects of additional mature aerobic granules to the formation of aerobic granules were investigated by inoculating activated sludge and feeding synthetic municipal wastewater. The change of granular configuration and diameter was observed during the cultivation process. The average sludge volume diameter rose from 0.10, 0.16 cm to 0.23,0.30 cm, and finally was up to 0.28, 0.43 cm at the 1th, 7th and 14th day respectively. Small granules with diameter from 0.1 to 0.3 cm had a relative rapid formation speed in both reactors, whereas, the differences of the formation speed of big granules were obvious. There were filamentous bacteria winging and floc sludge adhering to the surface of small granules through cultivation process. The results showed aerobic granules could form more rapidly when 15% mature aerobic granules were put into the reactor.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is usually considered to be a biofilm system consisting of granules only, although practical experience suggests that flocs and granules of various sizes co-exist. This study thus focused on understanding the contribution of flocs and granules of various sizes to nitrification in a full-scale AGS-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operated as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Continuously flowing wastewater-treatment processes can be configured for biological and physical selection to form and retain large biological aggregates (LBAs), along with suspended biomass that contains ordinary biological flocs and biomass that has detached from the LBAs. Suspended biomass and LBAs have different solids residence times (SRTs) and mass-transport resistances. Here, mathematical sub-models that describe metabolic processes, a 1-D biofilm, and spherical carriers that can migrate throughout a wastewater-treatment process were combined to simulate a full-scale demonstration train having anaerobic, anoxic, and oxic zones, as well as side-stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal.

Excessive organic matter in the anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) leads to the growth of a large number of heterotrophic bacteria, which disrupts the anaerobic ammonia oxidation. The adsorption-anaerobic ammonia oxidation process can effectively reduce excessive organic matter, capturing it instead of consuming it, which is a sustainable development technology. In this study, utilizing the excellent adsorption performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS), an adsorption-regeneration process was employed to remove organic matter at the front end of the Anammox process through bio-adsorption in an artificial simulated domestic sewage environment, and it was successfully used for denitrification.

The vestibular processing regions of the cerebellum integrate vestibular information with other sensory modalities and motor signals to regulate balance, gaze stability, and spatial orientation. A class of excitatory glutamatergic interneurons known as unipolar brush cells (UBCs) are highly concentrated within the granule cell layer of these regions.
