Published: February 2008

We propose a microfluidic method to measure the refractive index of liquids. This method is based on the dynamic focusing by a capillary when liquids with different refractive indexes are inserted into it. Fabrication of such a refractometer has been done by encapsulating two fibers and a capillary. A calibration method is proposed.

A compact and robust Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based on polymer core is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The fabrication is low-cost and has simple processes, including fusion splicing and polymer injection. Its characteristic is that the polymer fills the entire capillary core, which is easy to demodulate, and provides a good platform for the refractive index measurement of the polymer after curing.

In this paper, we report a capillary-based Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer that could be used for precise detection of variations in refractive indices of gaseous samples. The sensing mechanism is quite straightforward. Cladding and core modes of a capillary are simultaneously excited by coupling coherent laser beams to the capillary cladding and core, respectively.

Liquid seal for temperature sensing with fiber-optic refractometers.

Sensors (Basel)

August 2014

College of Optical and Electronic Technology, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou 310018, China.

Liquid sealing is an effective method to convert a fiber-optic refractometer into a simple and highly sensitive temperature sensor. A refractometer based on the thin-core fiber modal interferometer is sealed in a capillary tube filled with Cargille oil. Due to the thermo-optic effect of the sealing liquid, the high refractive-index sensitivity refractometer is subsequently sensitive to the ambient temperature.

Triple helical polysaccharides (t-polysaccharides) are easily gelated in water, resulting in difficult fractionation, leading to the complex and time-consuming chain conformational characterization. Moreover, the fractionation is not always successful due to the coexistence of individual chains and aggregates. In this work, we developed a facile and reliable method to rapidly and accurately characterize the chain conformation of t-polysaccharide without fractionation needed in traditional conformation characterization.
