Background/aims: The study evaluated the patterns of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptides, total tau and phospho-tau among Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementias (VAD).

Methods: Abeta-SDS-PAGE immunoblot and commercially available ELISAs were applied to the CSF analysis of 52 patients with probable (n = 21) and possible (n = 16) VAD, AD with cerebrovascular disease (n = 15), 30 patients with probable AD and 30 nondemented disease controls.

Results: AD and AD with cerebrovascular disease displayed a similar neurochemical phenotype in contrast to nondemented disease controls and probable VAD with regard to tau, p-tau, Abeta1-40(ox) and Abeta1-42%. Possible VAD displayed AD-like changes only for Abeta1-40(ox) and Abeta1-42%.

Conclusion: CSF neurochemical phenotypes sufficiently discriminate probable AD and VAD from each other, but their diagnostic value is limited in case of no clear-cut clinical appearance, such as possible VAD. Conversely, CSF Abeta peptides and p-tau levels may help estimate the involvement of AD-like pathophysiological pathways in VAD subgroups.

Background: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are utilized as a therapeutic option for patients with end-stage heart failure. While LVAD implantation can enhance survival rates and quality of life, the procedure has its risks, and postoperative complications are common. This review aims to investigate whether there is an association between living in a rural area and the incidence of postoperative complications or hospital readmissions following LVAD implantation, compared to urban LVAD recipients.

[Prevalence and 5-year mortality of dementia and association with geriatric syndromes in elderly population in Beijing].

Zhonghua Liu Xing Bing Xue Za Zhi

November 2024

Evidence-Based Medicine Center, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing100053, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in Beijing to determine how common dementia is among elderly individuals and how geriatric syndromes affect dementia and mortality risks, using data from 2013 to 2015.
  • The study involved 2,935 elderly participants, revealing a dementia prevalence of 5.9%, with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia being the most common types, linked to various risk factors like aging and lower education levels.
  • Over a follow-up period of about 5.4 years, the study found that elderly individuals with dementia had significantly higher mortality rates compared to those without dementia, emphasizing the serious health impact of these conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between serum calcium levels and the risk of all-cause dementia and vascular dementia (VaD), considering the influence of hypertension, diabetes, and depression.
  • A cohort of 363,182 participants from the UK Biobank, who were dementia-free at the beginning, was followed for an average of 13.8 years, leading to the identification of 5,836 all-cause dementia cases and 1,301 VaD cases.
  • Higher serum calcium levels were associated with a lower risk of both types of dementia; for instance, the highest calcium levels showed a reduced risk of all-cause dementia, while conditions like hypertension and depression played significant roles in mediating these associations.

Increasing evidence suggests that dalbavancin is an effective long-term treatment for ventricular assist device (VAD) infections, with various prolonged dosing regimens currently in use. This retrospective study aimed to assess dalbavancin pharmacokinetics in VAD patients and identify optimal, feasible dosing regimens for long-term suppressive outpatient therapy. Data from Heidelberg University Hospital's VAD register were analyzed using non-linear mixed-effects modeling for pharmacokinetic analysis and dosing simulations (Lixoft).

The updated prevalence and risk factors of dementia in old adults in China: A cross-sectional study.

J Alzheimers Dis

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Tianjin Huanhu Hospital, Tianjin Dementia Institute, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Cerebrovascular and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Tianjin, China.

Background: The continuously increasing aging population and life expectancy have led to an inconsistent and underestimated dementia prevalence in China. An updated epidemiologic study is urgently needed.

Objective: To update the prevalence rate and risk factors of dementia in China.
