Purpose: To compare circadian control of intraocular pressure (IOP) after a single drop of bimatoprost 0.03% or travoprost 0.004% in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Methods: Randomized, investigator-masked, paired-eye, 36-hour clinical comparison. After completing a washout, patients (N = 19) were randomized to a single drop of bimatoprost in one eye and travoprost in the other eye at 8 PM. At night, IOP was measured with patients lying in bed and sitting. IOP was measured every 4 h for 36 h in total.

Results: Mean IOP at 8 PM (prior to drop instillation) was 20.6 mmHg (18.5-24.0 mmHg) with the bimatoprost eye group and 21.1 mmHg (18.5-26.5 mmHg) with the travoprost eye group (p = 0.369). At every measurement, both bimatoprost and travoprost significantly reduced IOP from baseline. During the first 24 h, mean IOP (while sitting) after instillation of a single drop of study medication ranged from 17.8 to 19.7 mmHg with bimatoprost and from 17.2 to 20.0 mmHg with travoprost (p > or = 0.075). While in the supine position, IOP ranged from 21.6 to 24.9 mmHg with bimatoprost and from 21.1 to 25.2 mmHg with travoprost (p > or = 0.351). Both medications continued to control IOP for the remaining 12 h, with IOP approaching baseline after 36 h (mean IOP of 20.5 mmHg with bimatoprost and 21.5 mmHg with travoprost, p = 0.381). Study limitations included single-drop instillation and a short follow-up time.

Conclusions: This marks the first time a single drop has been used for this type of evaluation. These findings suggest that both bimatoprost and travoprost provide comparable and lasting control of circadian IOP in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Significance: Artificial tears remain the cornerstone for managing dry eye disease. The current study's real-world efficacy test of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, or sodium hyaluronate (SH)-based lubricants highlights their similar effects on noninvasive tear film parameters over the short term. However, patients reported better relief with SH-based lubricants.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful optical sensing platform that amplifies the target signals by Raman scattering. Despite SERS enabling a meager detection limit, even at the single-molecule level, SERS also tends to equally enhance unwanted molecules due to the non-specific binding of noise molecules in clinical samples, which complicates its use in complex samples such as bodily fluids, environmental water, or food matrices. To address this, we developed a novel non-fouling biomimetic SERS sensor by self-assembling an anti-adhesive, anti-fouling, and size-selective Lubricin (LUB) coating on gold nanoparticle (AuNP) functionalized glass slide surfaces via a simple drop-casting method.

Accuracy of self-reported foot strike pattern detection among endurance runners.

Introduction: Foot strike pattern is often associated with running related injury and the focus of training and rehabilitation for athletes. The ability to modify foot strike pattern depends on awareness of foot strike pattern before being able to attempt change the pattern. Accurate foot strike pattern detection may help prevent running related injury (RRI) and facilitate gait modifications and shoe transitions.

We demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, range-scalable repeatered distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) solution sharing technology with existing long-haul subsea telecom networks capable of low noise and high spatial and temporal resolution. Single ended DAS interrogation through a 2227 km line comprising 39 repeatered fiber spans is demonstrated with a 10 m spatial resolution, a 1.78 kHz sampling rate, and a strain resolution of 35 pε/√Hz for the outermost span.

Background: In cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART), filtration membrane obstruction during the ascites processing step is an important clinical problem. A novel membrane designed polyether sulfone filter (n-PES) was developed to reduce filter membrane obstruction. However, no clinical studies have compared the performance of n-PES filters with that of conventional filters.
